I had a very frightening experience with aspartame and I wanted to recount
it here. I know that not everyone responds to aspartame the way I did, but
in case someone has, this could be helpful. The day before yesterday, I had
some diet coke. I haven't had diet coke in years and years and years. That
night, I had some severe leg cramps, which I rarely get. I thought it might
have something to do with Atkins, so I googled for information. Then,
yesterday, I had 2 little jellos made with aspartame. I have never eaten
"diet" food before. I was always of the mind that if I wanted sweets, I
would eat sweets. Well, I got an attack of severe vertigo. It was so
scary. Now, this IS a problem I have had and I have been able to get it
under control. I learned the triggers and it hasn't happened in years. But
last night I just lay on my bed, hoping I wouldn't have to go to the
bathroom because getting there would have been so difficult (I didn't have
to). Today I have been recovering the way I do after a vertigo attack.
When something goes wrong with me, I look to what I have eaten and what I
have done out of the ordinary. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary,
but I did eat aspartame-containing products. My reaction last night was so
severe and so frightening and so, well, not linked to any of my known
triggers that I am convinced it was the aspartame. I can tell you now that,
given a choice, I would rather smoke crack (not that I ever have, but I hear
it's pretty bad for you) than touch aspartame ever, ever again. If you
don't have problems with aspartame, good for you! Continue to take it. But
if you are feeling icky, you might want to look to aspartame as the cause.
I also read somewhere (I can't prove this) that it's sometimes called
"natural flavoring" in food. Scary. I just wanted to share my experience.
