  1. I attempted the 8km swim, however due to starting out late and weather, i
    was unable to finish.

I will do it next year when I visit there.

Good on you for trying, Michael.

Based on what I've read here from you, my hope is that you'll pick an
event for which you can get in sufficient training so that you'll have a
high likelihood of success when you attempt it.

6km in 5 hrs is 5 minutes per 100m. That's a lot slower than the speed
you said you achieve in the pool, which was about 3 minutes per 100m if
memory serves. So you don't swim faster in a lake than you do in the
pool, and at 5 minutes per 100m, I don't think you can even maintain the
body heat you need to make it. Were you wearing a wetsuit?

Since we now know you can swim faster in the pool, you should probably
complete a few 8km swims in the pool before attempting another one in a
    lake.

Here is a strategy that will make you sound better in this newsgroup.
Just say that you attempted to do a 6 km lake swim and that you
completed it. In fact, don't tell anybody that you swam a certain
distance. Simply tell people that you swam 5 hours. I usually go
riding on weekends and ride several hours. sometimes people ask me how
much I rode and i say something like 4 hours, or 6 hours or whatever.
People always gasp at the idea of sitting on a bike for such a long
time. they have no idea of how far I can go or went. When they ask for
distance, they are even more impressed. Even if I tell them that I
rode 20 miles in 5 hours, they would be amazed. for the average
person, traveling into double digits in a non motorized vehicle or by
foot is always amazing. Now, I try not to mention triple digits for
fear that they may have a heart attack just by thinking about it.

I am impressed with your attempt. If you swim for five hours non-stop
that is a pretty challenging effort. Even if you swam 100 yards in
five hours, I would be impressed.

the fact that you are not a proficient swimmer makes it more
impressive. Sure, many of us could swim a lot more than that. However,
because we are better swimmers, it would take a lot less effort.

I am always very impressed at swimmers with lousy forms that make a
lot of effort to travel through the water and keep doing it forever.

Maybe I missed part of this conversation, but I thought everyone swam
faster in a pool than outdoors (save perhaps the obvious exception of
swimming downstream with a tailwind or similar circumstance). There's
wind, currents, surface turbulence, etc. I don't recall which of those
matters most (if I ever knew, truth be told), but the overall effect is
    well known.

The only explanation could be that something is chasing him outdoors. 🙂
I think I vaguely remember this coming up but I didn't pay any attention

Well at least you tried, which is more than most folk ever do. Don't be
discouraged, at least it shows you have stamina. With some coaching you
could i mprove your speed, and with more training your fitness will also
    build.
Never give up until you don't enjoy it any more.
