Actually, wouldnt it have been smarter for RV to wait for the summit to gap
Axel and get the points (Axel wouldnt contest anyway, most likely) so he and
Axel could work together on the descent and the following flat section?
Then RV could just lose Axel on the last climb and still claim the win. It
seems to me he worked a lot harder than he needed, and probably finished
with a smaller time gain on the favs then he would if he had climbed with
Axel on the hill in question. And he would have conserved more energy for
the big hills to come. Personally, I was baffled by the tactic he chose.

Why? Did you think that maybe Axel was towing [censored]'s skinny
ass along the flats to get him that big time gap before the
big climbs? If Merckx was no benefit to [censored], why agree to
a deal?

I thought Lefevere had taken my advise and had started posting on RBR, as he
said exactly these words.

He also added "Maybe it's time for Axel to quit cycling"
