I'm looking a at a used road bike with shimano dura-ace 9 speed bar end shifters on the drops. I'm not planning on immediately swapping them for STI shifters, but if i don't like the bar end, would this be possible? The rest of the bikes components are shimano 105, so it seems like i could switch out the bar end for 105 STI shifters with not too much difficulty or expense. Thoughts? Thank you!

Yeah, shouldn't be too much of an undertaking. A little labor intensive as you'd have to rewrap the bars, and do some cable routing. A word of warning though shifters are insanely expensive, at least by my standards, running about $140 usd for 105.
Unrelated: Good to see someone from DC. I'm from the Virginia side. Guess I should add that to my signiture.

Thanks! Yeah, i was noticing that the cheapest i could find those 105 shifters was about 130 on sale. I'm buying used due to a cash crunch, and was just wondering if i'd be able to make this conversion down the road (if i hate the bar end and/or get some cash to throw around).

There are two other issues with the conversion:- If you have v-brakes and Avid 287-V levers, you will have to install two Travel Agents to "convert" the brakes to the amount of cable pulled by STI levers.
- If you have a mountain front derailleur (LX or XT, for example), you will need to change it for a road front derailleur.

They are all shimano 105 brake levers and derailleurs. i shouldn't have those problems then going to a shimano 105 9-spd STI shifter right?

It's a road bike w/ bar-end shifters. So I doubt that it has v-brakes, Avid v-levers or a MTB front derailleur.
