The general consensus seems to be that most e-bike batteries can handle around 300-500 charge cycles before their capacity starts to degrade. But what does this really mean for consumers?
If an e-bike manufacturer claims that their battery can last for 500 charge cycles, does that mean it will still be able to hold 100% of its original capacity after 500 cycles? Or will it be more like 80% or 70%? And at what point can we consider the battery to be dead?
Furthermore, how do manufacturers even come up with these numbers? Is it based on lab tests that simulate real-world conditions, or is it just a rough estimate? And what about the quality of the charger and the charging habits of the user? Do these factors play a significant role in determining the actual lifespan of the battery?
Its also worth noting that many e-bike manufacturers seem to be using different methods to calculate their batterys discharge cycles. Some use the 80% depth of discharge method, while others use the 100% DOD method. This lack of standardization makes it difficult for consumers to compare the battery life of different e-bikes.
