  1. Trying to track down the recent creakfest that has manifested itself, I pulled
    the BB. (Shimano ES51)

Where the bearing cartridge nests into the plastic cup on the non-drive side,
whatever I had put in there at the last reassembly (presumably a decent quality
grease) had morphed into something thick and hard - almost like corrosion. A
little scrubbing with a pot scrubber got most of it off, but I still think some
of the cartridge's surface is pitted.

So - first question: What to put in between the cartridge and the plastic cup at
reassembly time? Conceivably nothing, since the interface is plastic-to-steel.
If something, what? I suspect that last time I used outboard motor shaft
grease - presumably being more water-resistant than most...

Second question: How about the threads on the plastic side? Bare? Grease?

Third question: How about the threads on the drive side? Grease? Teflon tape?
    Blue LocTite?

I've got a tube of muy expensivo Finish Line bicycle grease laying on the bench
    - whose container I suspect to be the most expensive thing about it - and I'd
use that in the absence of any recommendation...

I allways use grease (FL Teflon grease) for my BBs to install, some
other grease maybe have a negative effect on plastic, but I allways
use grease on the driveside and non-driveside of the BB cups threads
and between the non-drive cup and cartridge, it works without any
problems since years on Square, Octalink and ISIS BBs.

Grease the bolt threads and tapers (the latter is controversial: Shimano
say no, TA say yes and they both use the same taper!!!). Anti-seize is
best but any grease is better than none.

Try PTFE tape on the BB threads, or just grease them too. A smear of
grease between the cups and cartridge is a good idea, especially on the
side that screws in last (normally the LH side).

ES-51 is spline-shimano says yes to grease onto splines, TA doesn't
    make a spline BB.

Grease all that you can. BB shell, inside left cup, splines.

    Taper!! He means "Square BBs"

  6. I grease everywhere heavy and the BBs last longer then
before. Where I would have to do a BB every year or two now I can't
find my BB tool since its been a long time since replacing one.

Well spotted. I've not come across an ES- series BB before.

    Oh no, not again ;-)

Here's a picture of someone greasing a tapir. It appears to enjoy the
    experience.

ES is much like XTR spline BBs...made for few cranks(XT mostly) that
are now outta prodcution. We'll see how long the ES and XTR Octalink
series lasts...it'll be too bad to rplace a $200 crank for a $30 BB.
