BB Noise?

Check the crank bolts. It is common for the cranks to need retightening after a while on a new bike.
Should be part of the "30 day tuneup" offered from most LBS's.

Grease the crank arm and BB splines and make sure your bolts are nice and tight.

I have something very similar. I can hear it most of the time although it's more pronounced in
certain gears. I have also wondered about it being a BB problem but despite being there almost from
day one no one has been able to track it down.

Strangely it's not there if I back pedal. Also it's no worse when mashing hard uphill or
accelerating than it is when spinning gently along at a snail's pace. I kinda thought that a loose
BB or dodgy bearing would sound worse the more stress it was put under.

I tend to feel that the ticking I hear sounds like it's related to the chain and it has been
suggested that it might be a slightly bent/worn tooth on one of the chainrings.

How frequent is it? I hear mine twice per revolution. If it's once every few revs. might it be a
stiff chain link?

Do you mean the bolts that hold the chainrings? I greased them and tightened them.

I also put fat in the Ksyrium axles.......

It drives me crazy: it's so annoying to hear this soft ticking...I only hear it while turning the
cranks around, so it must be in the drivetrain.

Could a rather new chain make noise? (800km's). I greased it, but it makes no difference.

A ticking noise is not what I would expect from a bottom bracket (more likely: seatpost, stem,
handlebars, freehub body or cassette, pedal, saddle, chain, crank arm).

If you suspect the BB the first thing to do is remove it, grease the threads, and install it at the
proper torque.

Plumbers tape is not generally necessary and in your bike I suggest using anti-seize with any
aluminum BB cups. I generally only use plumbers tape or other filler if it comes loose repeatedly
and replacing the BB doesn't help.

If the bike is new, the dealer should be your first source of help.

I had a Campa BB that made noise on a bike I had B4 this one: it was far worse when I rode up hill
then on a flat road, whilst what I hear now doesn't make a difference. It makes me think of problems
I had previously with a 9S Connex chain. I solved that by putting thick oil on it.

I am also in doubt....I'll have it checked tomorrow. First I'll have the rear fork tested to see if
everything is aligned, to be certain it'n not due to a bad chain line. If that's OK, I'll try a new
wheel, if it's still there I'll have the BB checked out.

When I hear a ticking noise down below, it's because a screw holding the cleat to the shoe has come
lose and fell out and the little nut in the shoe is clacking with each revolution.

my bike hadnt seen any maintenance in a good bit of time/rain, and had both a 'tick' and a 'creak'.
i tightened the pedals. no go. and it wasnt the pedal bearings.

anyways, i didnt feel like hunting the specific problem step by step, so i
- took everything apart
- relubed BB threads, inside and out
- relubed BB shoulder where adjustable cup goes
- cleaned chainrings, lubed faces where they bolt onto crank
- lubed stack bolts and tightened them down, along with crank bolts, et al.

no ticks. no creaks. just silence.

my guess is that it was coming from the bb shoulder that inserts into the adjustable cup. despite
lubing it when i first put it togehter, it was now dry with a little bit of rust.

i did a creaking ultegra bb with the same treatment, minus the chainring take-apart, today. worked a
charm. basically, just take everythign apart, clean it, and add (as you say) fat.

this of course assumes that the sound is from the bb. who can tell? 😉

I finally solved it! I could have sworn it was the BB, but it was the chain ticking when it hit a
cog, because the der. pat was slightly bent.
