BB question (outboard type)

What, the MegaExo? Nope. It *only* works with the MegaExo cranks,
the same way that the current DA uses a BB that works with no other
design of crank. (Well, OK, DA shares the shaft/crank assembly
feature with the latest Ultegra now, from what I understand, but the
tech hasn't filtered down below that yet.)

Just like you can't swap cranks between ISIS, Octalink, square taper
and cottered BBs, you can't swap between MegaExo and any of the others
either.

Let me rethink this. If the FSA bb works for both road and mtn, does the
7800 work for the DA and XTR? Both are the same technology.

Don't know about Shimano, but the FSA Mtn is a different diameter than the
Road, so the outboard bearing assembly is not cross compatible.

Other than having received an answer from FSA, I would not have looked at
their applications chart, but there are TWO MegaExo BB'S, at least two that
I care about. The 8000 series and the 6000 series are NOT, from their
answer to my inquiry, interchangeable. Why did I ask ? Because I have a
Gossamer with a BSC thread, and could buy (cheap) an italian bracket, but
from a different series (SLK).

I didn't ask or learn the specific differences, but I suspect that if they
are showing non-compatibility within different series of their own products,
there's going to be a lot of risk in interchanging all these external BB's.

The crank itself is what makes it a double or triple, with FSA and
DA...spacers, etc on the crank spindle. For shimano, the bearings are
the same but utilize spacers to accomodate a 68 or 73mm shell,
something not seen on a road frame but the actual BBs are the
same...for shimano. As for intercompatibility of the BBs-FSA-shimano,
don't know but suspect a 'no'.

Thank you. I'm more interested in the Shimano cross compatability. I run
DA and would like to know if I could just swap a Deore LX or XT crank for a
hill climb. I just wanted to know if I could leave the BB in. From your
answer I suspect I can. I'm sorry for being unclear before, but I have a
cold and am not thinking too clearly.
