Hey stupid, bears HATE people, a stream of straggly 90lb runners prancin'
through the forest aren't worthy of a predators attentions, you see he'd burn
more calories running you down than he'd get from eating you. Besides, bears
will avoid a crowd, and trails used by humans as much as possible.

Fortunately, this happened just a few minutes before a hs xc running
team came through. I hadn't thought about the hazards that a hunter
leaving a gut pile might have for local residents until I read this.

To add to Alaska trails merriment, the smell of rotting moose flesh
attracted attention on college campus this morning. I'm surprised no
bears got on the carcasses.

I'll have to admit I prefer winter running in many respects - no bugs,
no bears (most years), no tourists, no heat, no field work
interruptions. But geez, it's so much easier to cover more ground in the

with far fewer interruptions than normal.

Well, a pistol is easy to carry. Just make sure if you do take a pistol
you remember to file off the sight. That way it doesn't hurt as much
when the bear takes it away from you and shoves it up your butt.

Now that the ban on assault weapons has expired, you can carry one of
those and shoot down all the moose and bears and whatever else you
want in 1-2 seconds.
If cross country runners get in the way, too bad..... collateral

Or you could run with a friend who is slower than you. Remember the old
