Beating heart surgery revives 88-year-old Saturday, June 14, 2003 Shiv Prasad Vashist was in a precarious condition. This 88-year-old retired principal of a post-graduate college, had a serious heart ailment with blocked arteries due to which his heart rate had dropped to an alarmingly low level, thus proving to be life threatening. Dr. H.S. Bedi, chief cardiac surgeon at Metro Heart Institute, in consultation with chief cardiologist Dr. Purshottam Lal, decided to perform a bypass surgery. However, as the patient was old and was suffering from paralysis on his left side as well as a preexisting damage of the right side of the brain, the risk of a conventional surgery was very high. A beating heart surgery was to be performed by Bedi, a pioneer in the technique and also holding world records for having performed the first series of multi-vessel beating heart surgeries. Vashist underwent bypass on a beating heart and had a quick recovery. we do beating heart surgery all the time now...probably about 40% of patients are eligible for it..
my hubby had it in Feb...amazing..we even have a video of the op...yup..he actually HAS a heart!!!
recovery IS amazingly faster than being on bypass....
