But so, as BHIT are /very/ keen to point out, do professional racing
cyclists. If they'd had their brains taken out first, people like
Boardman and Queally would make much more obvious figureheads (or at
least I'd have thought). And not just through the sport connection,
but by actually being at the top of their particular game.
Not always out of choice. The rule was a knee-jerk reaction by the UCI,
and you may have noticed that few riders wear them in the mountains. I
can understand the insane sprinters wanting to wear them on flat stages,
but unfortunately Cipo wasn't wearing one on his ankle the other day.
I think I heard that they're required to wear the helmet all the time,
unless the stage finishes on an uphill climb on a mountain, in which
case they can discard the helmets at any point on that final climb. I
could be wrong, but last year I was wondering what was going on when a
few of them didn't have them on in the TdF - I guess this was why.
Seems that the UCI decided the risk of injury is great enough at the
speeds the riders do on anything but the final climb - and so they leave
it to each rider's judgement on that last stretch upwards.
Personally, I can see they may be more prone to falls on that last
stretch regardless, but I guess the slower it is the less the risk, very
broadly speaking, and there's no way they could get helmets back on
after discarding on every mountain climb of a stage, in time for the
descent. So it seems like a compromise of sorts - maybe the only way
they could get it accepted by the majority was to allow discards on the
final climb, or risk total revolt by the whole field, I don't know.
