Ben Lomond

PS what's the dreaded midge situation?

Have you considered doing it from Aberfoyle - that has the facilities
you are looking for. A bit longer a walk in but not so overpopulated
as the voie normale is.

Will consider any thing that fits the bill Rob, any info on a campsite in
easy walking of Aberfoyle can get to any suggested start point by car for
doing Ben Lomond, wouldn't mind best route ideas.

There is a campsite within walking distance of Aberfoyle, there is a
path along the disused railway to save you from staggering down the
road.

Site: Cobeland Forestry Commision Caravan & Camping Site Aberfoyle
Fee: £ 8.40 (2 persons + car) (1999)
Setting: situated near the A81, half a mile south of Aberfoyle,
a few miles south of Loch Katrine
Ground: lawn, level, not muddy after rain
Infrastructure: small shop, drier, washing machine
Sanitary: clean, free showers, free hair drier, the sanitaries
are in a distance from some pitches
Comments: located on the banks of a river, the nearby street is
not disturbing, there is no pub in Aberfoyle

But that last bit seems to kills the idea of drinkies :-( But it seems

You could walk to Ben Lomond from the campsite but you /might/ get
lost in the forest and at 42km it's a bit of a trip. A mountain bike
could shorten it, or drive up to Kinlochard.

There's a hotel/bar at the start of the tourist track up Ben Lomond, just 5k
north of the Cashel campsite.

Thanks for campsite and pub info it's just a matter of choosing between the
two sites mentioned now I think.

Next comes deciding the best start point for doing Ben Lomond, originally I
had thought of a round starting from near the Rowardennan Hotel on the
eastern shore of Loch Lomond as im not bothered about a drive to the start
point of the walk I still might do it from there, but I would appreciate any
suggestions of best circulars.

Not what you asked but the youth hostel at Rowerdennan is ideally
placed for Ben Lomond and is less than a mile from the Rowerdennan
Hotel which does food. Beds available most nights this month.

If you are camping the midges are now out.

As far as circular routes for Ben Lomond goes the short one is up the
normal tourist path along the south ridge. Then descend via the
Ptarmigan ridge back to Rowerdennan.There is a good path up both
ridges.

Butterfield says that the slopes and ridges approaced along Gleann
Dubh via Comer are steeper but the solitude is worth it. If you are
happy making your own way rather than following tracks this way has
much to recomend it despite being essentially an out and back. If
otherwise stick to the tourist route.
