Try hunting down a pair of Nokian Trimmis (e.g.,
http://www.peglers.co.uk/6_Nokian-Trimmi.htm) as they're meant to be
relatively short to start with. They're also designed with a good sole
for actually walking about in and have long been one of the "wellies of
choice" amongst the walking/climbing/orienteering croud.

Does anyone know how Le Chameau compares in height? I'm eyeing up
either the Le Chameau All Tracks Ladies Neo or the Barbour Ladies Field
Boot, both neoprene lined. The nearest stockists for either are over
an hour away so I'd like to hear some opinions before going out to try
them. Thanks for the help!

A few years ago my wife bought a pair of Nokian Trimmi boots, I think they
were called Bogtrotters at that time, and were apparently favourites of
orienteers. After less than a year, they developed a leak. It looked to me
like a slight case of perishing. They were returned through the vendor and
replaced. I'm afraid the replacements had a very similar fate. They were
looked after in the recommended way but this didn't seem to make any
difference. It's perfectly possible that they were both unusual but at £45
a time (then), we weren't prepared to risk it. I'm sure others have had
happier experiences, but you speak as you find.

She bought instead, a pair of Le Chameau short boots, I think the model is
Anjou. These retail (internet) for £39.95, and have been excellent. After
three-four years they are as good as new, except of course for wear on
soles. Hers are size 38F and are about 25 centimetres in height.

(room for socks) or whether I'll have to get the next size up? They

Not understanding these things of course, all I can report is that my wife
says she normally takes a size 4 1/2 shoe and the size 38 Euro fits well
with a THIN SOCK!

Fit can be a bit subjective so I think there would be no substitute for
actually trying a pair. I'm sure you can find some online but this link

Mine are normal size and worn with felt insoles and normal (not thick)
socks. These, as you will see from the price, are not gardening
wellies. Normal shoe size should be fine.

I have worn mine every day throughout the winter for my short cycle
commute in mid norway.

Success! I found a shop in town that sells Le Chameau wellies and have
bought the Ladies All Track wellies in Navy size 37. Personally I
think that these boots are far superior to the Hunters. The cotton
lining is soft and pleasantly warm (but not so that my feet will
swelter in summer), and the boot is very nicely moulded around the
ankle. This means that, not only do they look more feminine they feel
great, and supported. The Hunters felt very stiff around the ankle,
and for my size feet, quite loose so I'd feel like they're more
suseptible to twisting. Also when taking off a Hunter boot I find it
feels like there's a rubber band around your foot and that you'll rip
it in two. The Le Chameau has enough ease and flexibility that you can
take them on and off easily. The heel is also made as apart of the
boot oppose to separately so there should be less chance of them
splitting or breaking at the heel. They are both the same price but I
think you get better value with the Le Chameau.

Typical; it stops raining once I've bought them!
