  1. My bg was 105. For dinner I made a soup of turnips, celery, and tofu, which was 10g of carbs and 141
calories. For dessert I had a jello smoothie, which I suppose was the problem: 18g and 100 calories.
I couldn't resist. 40 minutes before the meal, I had Avandamet (it seems to work best when taken
beforehand.) An hour later, my bg has jumped up to 154. Is this normal? (I know, I shouldn't have
    had the dessert.)

Turnips are pretty starchy, I would be surprised if the carb count was only 10gr. What was in
the smoothie? Milk? Yoghurt? The jello was sugar free? Starchy veges have more carbs when well
    cooked than raw.

Every body is different in how they react to certain carbs. Some of us find there are some foods we
simply can't eat. I have no idea what a Jell-O smoothie is. Is there some way you could have made it
    with sugar free Jell-O?

Normal? No, but certainly not unusual for a diabetic. I once asked my endo what kind of spikes I
should expect after meals, and the answer was 100 points. The real issue is whether you're getting
back down into normal ranges 2 or 3 hours after the meal.

I'm a type II on insulin. I've been in the 5% club for several years now, despite the spikes.

In the absence of any control by your beta cells, 1 gram of fast carb should give you a very
quick 3 mg/dL jump in bG

(Actually, that's what it does to a 200-lb male, smaller folks should see bigger jumps)

    The Smoothie probably was mostly fast carb. So 18 x 3 = 54, 105 + 54 =
    159.. . .makes sense.

I have no idea of what happened to the carb in the soup but note that simmered soups and sauces tend
to extract soluble carb from otherwise "safe" diabetic foods. Soluble carb is a fast carb. Thus, you
might have gotten a bigger dose of fast carb than you intended.

(My carb book indicates that turnips contain 26 gram carb per lb of turnip
(160.6% carb). I use them as a replacement for potatoes in homemade beef stew. My insulin sometimes
forces my bG down after a meal of the stew)

    Old Al

  6. that is NOT a spike. Going up to 275 would be a "spike". take it easy, Chris. your bg's are not
going to remain exactly the same every hour of every day. just do your best to keep them with
reason. if your A1c is under 6 you are doing great...

  7. Oldal I miss potatoes in my morning omelette. I've been using chayote squash instead. What can you
tell me about the taste of turnips? I've never eaten one, as far as I know.

Of course it's a spike. It's not a huge spike, but it's about 50 points and it's over 140. We try to
stay under 140 at 1 hour post prandial. That counts as a spike in my book.

  11. Priscilla, your book needs re-writing! I wish you wouldn't cause folks undue alarm of a minor change
in bg like up to 154. I'm gonna really have to keep a close eye on you, I can see, to counter your
bad advice you like to spread here.

Saying "we try to stay under 140 at 1 hr" is fine for a textbook. Join the real world. You are just
going to make the op feel like he/she is a failure at dealing with their DM. They are doing fine.

I knew from the first few post you made here, that you were gonna end up being a PITA. You give bad
advice. You may not be a bad person, but you don't know what you are talking about.

    Hi Chris

Feeling a little confused by what came after this? So are the rest of us I suspect.

They are both right - it's all a matter of degree. I personally couldn't care if it was a spike or
not. That's irrelevant. It was an undesirable rise in your BGs that you would try to avoid in the
future, but which you shouldn't be unduly concerned about unless it recurs too often. It is
certainly worth reviewing the content and quantity of your meal; but beyond that, no big deal.

Your intent should be to get to the point where your spikes/surges/rise/highest post prandial
whatever is consistently under 140 or even less if possible.

Considering the rest of this thread; on second thoughts - don't consider the rest of this thread.
    Schoolyard stuff.

    Cheers Alan, T2, Oz

  13. Thanks, Priscilla. I see that turnips are 4 g. of carb per half cup while potatoes are about 25.
