  1. Well, I guess it's a sure sign of old age, not being as
young as one used to be, being over the hill, all that
    aging rubish.

Fortunately it's not me. Linda is getting bi-focals in a
couple of weeks (the progressive kind)

Any advice from any of you folks as to what to look out for
when riding with these kind of spectacles? I understand that
stairs can be a bit of an issue right early on...

As for me, well it won't be long. The eye Doc says I'll be
getting glasses myself by this time next year.

    TIA!

I haven't noticed any particular prob riding with them. (5
years or so). Yes...stairs are a bit tricky at first. They
    are definately out of focus.

It all depends on the size and shape of the lens and the two
(or three - trifocal) focus zones. Instead of just one focal
distance, you now have a couple. Head straight, eyes looking
down at the floor results in fuzziness, because that area is
designated for closeup reading. So you end up moving the
    head more to compensate.

But it soon becomes second nature and you don't notice
anymore, just as the original transition to glasses did.

Bi-focals are a bad idea for bike riding, especially off-
road. The lower part of these specs (progressive or
traditional) are for reading and seeing things up close, not
for distance. When you are riding, you need your entire
visual spectrum for seeing distance: up, ahead, AND down. I
rode with bifocals once; that was all it took to know I had
made a big mistake. I was constantly having to put my head
in unnatural positions to be able to see where I was going
and what I was riding over. What a pain; a near disaster.

Tell her to wear contacts or get distance only sports
glasses for bike riding and such. With contacts, you can
experiment with mono-vision (one eye for distance; one eye
for close). The optometrists don't recommend this for
driving or sports, but you adapt to it pretty quickly,
surprising or weird though it may sound.

I got a set of single vision (in the distance script) sports
glasses to wear while riding. i doubt I will be reading fine
    print at bike speeds.

I can't look behind in my varifocals - I have a mirror and
must get a pair of single vision specs.

    I don't find a problem with variafocals now...although I had
difficulty standing up for the first month!. Once you are
used to them most things are OK even long descents.
