Indeed, I heard it whilst bringing Vernon back from Doc's.. I shall be
composing something. Lord Fool who was anti-cyclist sounded as if he needed
to be perched in a corner of a gentlemen's club somewhere, after being
stuffed & mounted ;-)

was the first item).

I really don't know why I continued listening that long. I only put
Radio 4 on for the brilliant Ed Reardon's Week, which was as hilarious
as ever, and forgot to turn off at the end.

In fairness, you do mean "Anthony Quinton who was anti pavement-cyclist".

I think I last heard him perform live in the Congregation debate where
he was arguing for our granting, or rather aginst our not granting an
honourary degree to Margaret Thatcher. One of his best arguments was
that if we didn't give her one then we'd never get a chance to give
her one later. Apart from the weakness of the argument, the performance
was very entertaining.

The esteemed Lord did confess that he was often "too battered" to drive. I
suspect that sitting in the gentleman's club might have something to do with
that...

I thought it was rather good. Rog got to say a lot & Lord Nimby didn't
get his rambling moans in twice. In fact what Mr Geffen said was well
focussed & clear so should have convinced quite a few non-cyclist types.
It wasn't really about licensing but about making cyclists not do dumb
things.

But no one pointed out that pavement-cycling, cycle red-light jumping &
one-way-wrong-way cycling are all currently illegal anyway, it's just
plod thinks there's better things for them to do. Licensing wouldn't
make them any more illegal, but I suppose it would make for there being
more to lose. But Rog squashed the idea flat by pointing out how much it
would cost for so little, if any, gain.

Whilst surfing the 'net on night shift, I actually came across a comment
from an Australian columnist, who suggest that cyclists be banned from the
roads of Sydney, as they added to pollution by slowing cars down!

I'm speaking at the Transport for London School Travel Conference
tomorrow. That concentrates the mind, and I have been putting a lot
of thought towards the difficulties and frustations I have as a London
cyclist.

Very nearly all traffic lights are set up for motorists' use. Push
button crossings and junction lights have sensors which pick up the
flow of motor traffic, and will quickly change colour when there is no
motor traffic flow. If there is constant motor traffic flow they will
stay unchanged for a set period of time before changing. Motor
traffic tends to travel in bunches, with faster drivers catching up
with slower drivers. Cyclists tend to stay out of these bunches so
very often are separate from motorists. Traffic light sensors do not
usually pick up cyclists, so cyclists face red lights more frequently
than motorists, and at times when motor traffic would not expect, such
as when approaching the lights.

Traffic lights do not work properly for cyclists, hence the
frustration.

The value of trafficlights for cyclist is best illustrated with the way
they are sometimes implemented in the Netherlands. For cyclists all
lights go green at the same time. Works fine, it's not cyclist who need
lights!

The presenter, I believe put it up as an Aunt Sally to the guy from the
CTC, who then suggested that it could offer some benefits to cyclists,
though not in road safety terms.

The other guy, a pedestrian and non-driver had explained how his wife
had had her pelvis broken in a collision with a cyclist. He also
described how he thought the problems of red light abuse by cyclists,
pavement cycling, and cycling the wrong way down one-way streets could
be better policed, and perhaps bicycles impounded (no mention of licensing).

The Moral Maze needs to be seen as an art form. I think it's great whilst I
listen and I can never remember any of the arguments once it's finished.

I find it important to listen to the Archers once a month or so - then I can
pretend to be middle class if the need arises.

Are you pehaps too tense? A little light cycling may help.
