bicycles in U.S. Virgin Islands

For some time I've been collecting information on user experiences taking bikes on planes, trains,
buses, boats, etc. There's lots of stuff on rentals, folding bikes, boxing, airlines, and railroads
around the world and how to ride in/out of about 120 airports.

Mike, I'm an avid cyclist and I've visited St John several times, but I've never been masochistic
enough to try cycling there. The roads are narrow and often very steep. That being said, I have seen
a few bikes on the roads there, but usually early in the day before there is much traffic. They even
have a yearly race from one end of the island to the other but for that event they usually close off
the roads to cars. As for rentals, I've never seen any, but then again I haven't been back there for

About 15 years ago I went to St Thomas and St John. I don't know if things have changed. St Thomas
was over-run by cars. I wouldn't want to ride a bike on St Thomas. The traffic is fast and
aggressive and the attitudes seemed to border on malicious. From St Thomas I took a bike on a ferry
over to St John. It was a wonderful experience. Be prepared for heat and hills, and no where to get
water. Absolutely beautiful.

Neither island is good cycling territory. St. Thomas is crowded and St. John is too damned dangerous
becuse of the narrow roads, steep hills, and taxi drivers. I wouldn't bother.

Excellent hiking on St. John, though.

Not only is it VERY hilly (except the coast which is only kinda hilly) the roads are indeed
narrow AND they drive on the "wrong side" of the road. Besides the obvious problem for you, a lot
of the drivers are use to driving on the other side of the road and you don't want to be a
"training obstacle"

I would do try the bahamas , grand caymen or Cuba
