  1. Hey guys. Beginner cyclist here, under 500 miles logged. I'm training for the NYC triathlon in the summer, and my coach told me to buy a computer. Can anyone suggest a (relatively) inexpensive one that tracks cadence, speed, etc.?

Also, are there any that come with a watch that I can sync it up with?

    Thanks much!

  2. Buy the GARMIN Foretrex 301 it retails for around $200 but you can get it at amazon for $124 it has a Build in GPS that keeps track of your miles running/biking/swimming,It has a heart rate monitor you can track your HR-zone, it lets you choose your work out so you can mount it on a bike or strap it on your arm and go for a run or swim.It has usb interface so you can upload all your info into your computer. If you want to spend a little more you can go for the garmin 305($159.99).The 305 looks better and it has more features I own a 301 but when it dies i will replace it with the 305 or whatever they have thats new Garmin makes a solid product,If you have a Iphone I would download one of the bike apps. I use Cyclemeter (4.99) it works very well and it doesn't drain your battery i have gone of 5 hour bike ride and listen to music without having to recharge. If you don't have an Iphone and you don't want to spend $124 get the VDO C2DS Digital Double Wireless Cycle Computer (w/Cadence)you can find it for as low ass 59.99

Thanks much! Are either the 301 or 305 as accurate as a computer that monitors the cadence? It doesn't seem like that one does...I like the 305 more than the 301, because it looks more substantial, but can I swim in either of them?

  4. I wouldn't use it in the water But it does say that its water proof 1 meter. If you leave the data port open your watch will be damaged so why take that risk? I Bought my 301 long time ago the 305 is your best bet. I have the VDO on my bike in case i ride some where that i don't get a GPS signal in the city you have places that you will not get a gps signal so you can keep tracking your miles on the VDO.

  5. All right, thanks a bunch. Do you know if it comes with a little sensor type thingamajig to track your cadence?

  6. The VDO has a cadence kit that you can buy. They also sell it as a complete set.

  7. And then use both?

Or I can hook up the VDO's kit with the Garmin?

  8. I use both the cadence kit will not work on the garmin its only for VDO.Its not a good idea to use GPS by itself. If you lose signal you will lose your data and your ride will be off but if you can look at the bike computer and see your miles you can add it to your ride.

  9. So What's the point in getting the garmin? What doesn't the VDO do?

  10. it tracks your miles and heart rate if your training for a tri your training would benefit from this watch. If you don't want to spend the money then you can just use a simple bike computer i gave you 3 choices i use all 3 you can pick and choose what you need. The VDO is a simple bike computer that will track miles/current speed/cadence. The 305 is a GPS watch that will track your miles when you are running/bike. It has a heart rate monitor with alerts so your alway in he best training zone, it gives you speed/location/altitude you can also look at your ride/run on google maps and track your progress. I got you started you can take it from here and do your own research check out polar and cateye for similar products.

  11. All right, thanks so much for your help. i found a cadence add on for the garmin, so I think I'm just going to get that. Thanks for everything!

  12. no problem good luck on your training.
