Bike Rack Ideas?

I think the CAN$150 is well worth the security of your much more expensive
MTB, don't you? Don't be cheap with expensive things riding on top of your
80+ km/h car. By a real rack.

Rockymounts trays cost a lot less. Ditto for used trays. I have 3 (two Thule
uprights & 1 Rockymounts fork-mount) that I should be selling, since I've
switched to hitch-mount bike carrying.

Wow. Not a place to try new things...if it fails, things will not be
pretty.

I recommend Yakima Raptor carriers...just don't crank the wheelstraps down
too tight.

If you already have a roofrack, then try this (I did this ads a kid all the
time) butr remember, this is free advice and worth exactly what you paid for
it....

1. Turn bike upside down while lifting into the air.
2. Place bike (upside down) with the handlebars parallel to the forward bar and
resting on it.
3. Make sure rear bar is under seat.
4. Bungee or tie handlebars to forward bar.
5. Ditto seat to rear bar.
6. Add diagonalties from BB is needed to stop swaying.
7. Drive. Do NOT leave parked anywhere like that, though. Most thieves have
knives.

Sucks to be that guy...but it's probably his own fault. If the whole rack
came off, that means feet and crossbars. Which means stuff was installed
wrong on his roof.

And, he's not using Raptors, as the front wheels are off those bikes.
Raptors use a huge circular lockable clamp to grab the downtube, and straps
to secure the wheels. I freaking love them.

Okay, on second glance, it looks like the front wheels were attached on the
roof...but the bike mount didn't fail, the rack-to-car interface did. Still
gotta be that guy's fault, not the rack.

Okay, read the article. He knows it's his own damn fault. Still kick-ass
of Yakima to give him a discount on new clips.

Well, I drive 90 for about 40 minutes (from College Park to Schaeffer Farms,
that's 495 and 270 for all the DC folks) with two bikes on top all the time,
and my stuff holds tight. Of course, I've installed about 50 roofracks,
so...

Cool link Slack. At least they got some badass riding in.

I've had a Rockymount tray on my Thule racks for about a year ... has held
up fine (even if i had to mount it ass-backwards to fit on the subaru).

(I always use a safety line (bike lock) from the bike to the car's rails
though)
