  1. Mike!
I didnt want to get into a food fight here, my response was more out of
irritation on the use of word 'stupid' tah any thing else. If we want
we should have a thread about 'shortening fats', there is no simple or
stupid answer to it just an information based judgement.
I know transfats are bad and so are the saturated fats. Newer canola
based shortenings are better than old hydrogenated vegetable
shortenings that had high amounts of transfats. The 2006 labeling act
mandates the manufacturers to give the amount of transfats, this lead
the manufactures of vegetable shortenings to improve their products.
My grandafther passed away at the age of 106, who ate oodles of Ghee
(full of saturated fats) every day. My exwife's grandfather luved lard
till his ripe old age 98. So, I agree that saturated fats are not
necessarily bad. It is a question of balancing act if you may be prone
CHDs. People switched away from saturated fats to vegetable shortening
not realizing the ills of trans-fats which could even cause blindness.
This lead USDA labeling act of 2006 to give the transfats. I am not
saying these are sfae alternative, we may find something else in these
synthesized fats some thing worse than transfats. Till we do, the
vegetable shortenings with zero transfats seems to be the better
    alternatives.
    Yogi
