  1. Folks,

Had a superb walk up Helvellyn on Monday but the overall experience was spoiled by severe pain from
the top of my Merrylls rubbing against my upper ankles on the way down. I also got a few blisters on
my toes and back of ankles.

The boots are fairly new but have been worn about a dozen times now so I was hoping this would have
    stopped by now.

I was wearing some cotton socks inside a pair of Bridgedale walking socks. The cotton socks probably
made things worse and it might have been better without them. I've seen lining socks but at £12 a
    pair seemed excessive.

As for the rubbing this really bruised my legs above the ankle - is there anything that can be done
to stop this ? - maybe I need to wrap some padding around my lower legs :-)

    Any advice here greatly appreciated.

I put sportstape on my 'hotspots' before walking. It prevents the rubbing against your skin and it
will last for several days before you need to replace them.

I too have been suffering lately. I have climbed the Conic Hill twice recently (quite steep) and on
both occasions both my heels were raw. On the other hand I have had my boots for at least 15 years
and on normal hill walks do not have any bother. A friend told me that this is common when you are
walking up steep inclines. I am going to seriously have to think about putting on some sort of tape.

Re your sore ankles, I find that if I tie my laces too tight at the top of my boots I can suffer
from sore ankles. What I tend to do when lacing up is lean my leg forward as if you are stretching
your calf muscle and in this position lace up. I find this gives me the manoeuvrability and removes
    the chaffing on the ankles.

I've tried the microporous tape trick. While it was quite successful, it wasn't half as effective as
ditching the inner sock and using only a single sock made of a more technical fibre than wool or
cotton. I think I'm currently using some "woolly" Coolmax ones. My feet don't sweat any more and I
can't remember the last time I had a blister.

As for the ankle chafing, I'd guess the boots are laced too slack or too tight at the top. I aim for
tight at the bottom, loose in the middle (I have a high arch and it's b****y painful having it
crushed down, then really tight at the top. After a mile or two, the top lacing has slackened to a
    nice comfortable supportive level.
