  1. Well I'm glad I couldn't run yesterday's Boston Marathon. It
was hotter than hell. At least it wasn't humid.

I managed to see my wife at mile 17 and 25. She finished
92nd among women with a time of 3:23 and a chip time of
3:19. The heat got to her by mile
    23. She must have drank a gallon of fluids on the
course. She credits that to her good finish. She
said all she did was drink and drink and drink some
more. She was the fourth woman from the state of
    Wisconsin where we live.

I'm a little peeved that Boston doesn't use the chip time as
the "official" time. Does anyone know why this is? It seems
silly that they do something progressive like let the women
start in front, but they still use the gun start to clock
your official time. Every other race in the world uses chip
    time. It just seems stupid.

I've ran hundreds of races with a timing chip and I have
never, ever seen results posted where the chip time was
    considered your official race time.

Gun time is always used as the official result where I
    come from.

    cheers,

hey, congrats to your wife on her great finish at Boston.

  4. A different but simalar situation occured in the Vineman 1/2
IM Triathlon a couple of years ago. Triathlon is always
scored by chip time or handicapped start time. On this day
an Age Group athlete was I think the overall winner but I'm
sure he was in the top 3 and wanted to claim prize money.
The pros that were beaten thought that this was unfair since
they would have gone faster if they had seen him and been
    able to race with him.

The promoter desided to award both athletes equal prize
money. In the grand scheme of things it didn't cost him that
much and he made everyone happy.

  5. That happened to a guy I know at Muncie Endurathon back in
    99. He won but raced in the age group division instead of
elite. He won but was ineligible for the $750 prize money.

I know Chicago Marathon uses chip time as official.
Maybe I am mistaken about other races using chip time
as official time. It still seems stupid to me,
especially when it would have made a difference of 15
    places for my wife.

I believe you´re mistaken about Chicago as well - I find it
quite impossible that chip times could be used to award
    gender or division places.

It is possible - although I´ve seen only one such case -
that the results can be listed according to chip times, but
that doesn´t make them "official" in any sense.

    RULE 245

    FINISH LINE RECORDING AND TIMING

    1. Officials at the finish should record each number as the
athlete completes the race, along with the athlete's
finish time. The order in which the athletes cross the
finish line will be the official finish position.

The White Rock Marathon in Dallas uses chip time to
determine all age-group placings. IIRC only the top five men
and women are ranked by gun time.
