Tailwind pretty much all the way I think -- it was my fastest BR. I
broke my PB to the first checkpoint by about 30 seconds, and then the
final checkpoint up the climb by 30 sec -- 14:03.

TT from bottom of Smith's Gully was pretty darn fast, and we all hung
    on for the duration.

I keep on annoying people by using my triple ring. Dutchy's just
    jealous. 🙂

Saw Gag's water rockets; unfortunately, he broke it, much to the
delight of his kids. A backup unaerodynamic bottle was substituted,
    and went to impressive heights.

Stupid drivechain needs maintenance, er, replacing. Bikes are too
fickle. 2500km?! I've been cleaning the damn thing! I've got to
learn to treat my gear properly. My cleats only lasted 3 months, the
top-tube to the bike is rather scratched (how old is your second hand
frame, Dutch? It sure was shiny). There are gouges in the
chain-stay, from the muliple times the chain has gotten wedged.

Still too tired to write anything more here.

If TT from Smiths Gully is to become a standard part of the ride can I
suggest it just goes to Hurstbridge and that becomes a catch up point.
This ride is rapidly becoming a series of TT's with not much bunch ride
(for me anyway). Last ride had bunch ride to the first climb. Split on
the first climb, split coming into Warrandyte, individual climbs to K
Ground, TT to Diamond Creek, split on the D creek climb, and group ride
from Greensborough to Heidelberg. By my reckoning I'm seeing a 20% group
ride, 80% ITT and catching up with some cyclists at Smiths Gully and at
various spots along the way. And I'm guessing that's why we haven't seen
BT for a while (you still lurking out there Brett??) coz there's not
much point riding a bunch ride if you spend most of the time on your own.

The catch up points are so far apart now, the faster riders are so
rested the slower riders get little or no rest and just get dropped
again. What was a fun ride just seems to be getting a little too
serious. We always said this was a ride for anyone who wanted to come
along, but at the moment I'd pity anyone who hadn't done a fair amount
of training prior to joining the ride (and expect they'd never come back).

I'd be happy with catch up at Hurstbridge, group ride through to Diamond
Creek (especially through the dodgy section just before D Creek). Catch
up at top of Diamind Creek climb and group ride through to
Greensborough. If there are planned TT sections then there needs to be
planned group ride sections as well.

That's my 2cents. If everyone else is happy with how it has been going
I'll just treat it as a largely solo training ride.

    DaveB "end of rant"

Have to agree with you on that one Dave. Although I don't mind having a
crack at the climbs and TT, I also enjoy the occasional "sociable" bit of
the BR. Between Hurstbridge and Diamond Creek today, Dutch got to the front
at one stage and slowed the pace down to "cruise" and I must say it was
quite enjoyable. There were only five of us but it was great to be able to
just ride and enjoy the scenery, company, great weather.

I agree that the BRs seem to be getting too competitive.......even today on
the usual Team TT section, it ended up being a succession of one of the
blokes from the back flying past the bloke on the front and trying to create
a break.......good fun for a while but not so much so when you are the guy
on the front and in the process of going lactic!!

I did the right thing and stayed with the newbie (Mark SS) on the Warrandyte
climb and he did OK for his first crack at it, coming in at about 16 min or
so. He turned off just after the Warrandyte climb stop (as per first few
BRs) and headed back to Flemington (hope you found your way OK and enjoyed
the ride Mark.....see you next time!!).

After that there was just the 5 of us and we all went via Clintons Rd to the
coffee shop (Blah was keen to go direct but caved in to peer group
pressure). Ess made a bit of a break prior to Clintons Rd and Blah tried to
chase him down to no avail. Blah, Dutch, Tim, and I all started the climb
pretty well together with Ess out of sight by this stage. I thought I would
put in a bit of an effort at the start of the climb and went past Blah and
headed up past the cow paddock......after 500m or so I felt pretty knackered
and figured that Blah would be right behind me so I looked over my shoulder
(planning to ease up and wait for him) but he wasn't in sight!! I caught a
glimpse of Ess across the paddock (he had already gone around the sharp
right and was near the top of the hill) so I decided to keep pushing it on
the off chance that I might catch him (I wish). Pushed it to the coffee
shop and Ess was pretty surprised when I rocked up as he had virtually only
just finished getting off the bike.

I also was silly enough to get on Ess's wheel off of the roundabout at
Diamond Creek. I stayed with him for about the first third of the climb but
then had to drop off. Little did I know, he was going hard and ended up
beating his PB for the c2max registered climb (I was about 40 sec or so
behind him). From what he was saying in the coffee shop, I am keen to
compare times on a climb with > 4% gradient so that we can check out the
    corresponding power outputs on c2max!!!

Anyway Dave......I will prob be there next week and will make a point of
regrouping for all of the aforementioned parts of the ride........see you
    then.

    Ride On,

    Gags

Totally agree DaveB, it has become a real ITT feast. Disclaimer: no offence
or ego injections implied - but there is defiantly a growing gap between the
different levels of riders on the BR. This doesn't have to be a negative
thing, although it does have negative side effects if not addressed. So
discussing this topic is probably long over due. The last thing we want to
do is have riders not show for one of the best Sunday hill rides around!

Even us guys up the front spend a fair amount of time on our own. I'll
admit to being someone who has contributed to driving up the pace of things
and hopefully getting a few others to push that little bit harder than they
normally would.. this is great for individual training and development, but
has removed some of the social aspect of the BR.

I have a few ideas/comments that I think are worth voicing (unlike most of
the other posts I make) 😉...

Maybe if there are higher numbers of riders as the weather fines up we could
split the group at the start and meet up at Smiths Gully? With the first
group starting 10mins later and/or doing additional hill repeats on Clintons
or maybe doing Alma Rd then back down though to Clintons Rd? This will
allow those who are always off the front to both get more kms on the legs,
and do it at any speed they like.. then the second group could effectively
become the groupetto. Those who blow up can fall back and sit on a wheel
then attack again later on 🙂

More group sections / neutral zones earlier on in the ride might help. From
Doncaster to the start of the Kangaroo Ground climb... then from the water
tower to Alma Rd or though to the Clintons Rd turn off?

Anyways, </ideas>.... I'm keen to hear what everyone else has to say...

BTW - Looking at my HRM stats - as for energy used and meters climbed, the
BR is harder than the normal Bike Life 1/20 ride.. but don't tell the
regular BL guys that... JonoL shhhh! 😉

Check out the Clintons Rd entry I posted on c2m.. It is the only 'wattage'

    :rockin and typin:

  10. Good to take my (new for me) ‘Crosslight’ bike into some new roads with this great bunch on such a magnific morning.

Rolling out from Flemington taking Chandler hway & east along Doncaster rd along the BR route I forgot all about that incline after the Eastern Fway overpass, haven’t even officially started the ride & I’m looking to jump into the 30t ‘bail’ chainwheel on my triple, sheesh!
Early at the start, well, before anyone else so I got out into some sun, tiring to break into double figures.
Essendon, Blah, Gags, Dutch, TimC rock in & we set off.

Even though I safely stowed on board a BR route map from Bikesoiler everything after the left turn into Old Warrandyte Rd just drew a blank with me so I just followed which ever wheel I could see, but TimC, Dutch & Gags gave me some pointers. We descended into some road works – gravel – at Tindals rd where Dutchy washed off some knots with thoughts of more unhappier times perhaps, while I rolled on weighting the pedals with a hope that my less-than-elegant cyclocross frame & beefy alloy fork would lap this sort of stuff up. Must admit though that my Vittoria Rubinos 700x23C didn’t take kindly to sudden changes of direction on loose gravel while dragging the anchors.
Past Donvale school there was an uphill bit that got the Sti shifting working. Gags rolled off half way up with some chain suck from what I remember, I recall some shifting issues he was having riding alongside him at Doncaster rd before, but he did mention that he just fitted all his gear across to the freshly repainted Cecil Walker frame & maybe there was an opportunity for some fine tuning.
Reynolds Rd I found myself 10 bike lengths off Essendon’s or Blahs wheel so I figure I try make the gap, into the drops & sort myself into a good cog, doing this looking down for a sec I round a left bend where the road eases down & I can see ahead for about 2 kms. That’s when I realise that there’s no bike ahead. Huh? Over my shoulder I catch TimC I think pointing off to the right. Yep I missed the Harris Gully Rd turnoff. Slowed up on the decent & hooked a U-ie. As I’m pedalling back, to where all the guys are waiting I can’t get any speed up & notice that I’m dragging my rear brake pad on one side (my bike runs Avid cantilevers). I roll up & fudge about, Gags saves me getting to my loose allen keys floating about in my backpack with his complete bike-tool-kit thingy. As I get my figures dirty I notice that the pad is OK, but something else is out. So I flick out the rear wheel quick release & reseat my rear wheel.
Things don’t come to me very easily sometimes & it’s only later when I’m grinding up another hill (yep, there’s a few of them on this ride) that I realise that my rear quick release is not set tight enough & later heavy braking manoeuvre again cocks the rear wheel slightly enough to cause a nuisance.

Through Warrandyte & I’m told to set my stopwatch, it’s on after the bus stop. The road kicks up a little & Ess, Blah & TimC shoot off. For a sec I think about it but realise being my first I have no idea what I’m in for so I keep a little in the bank & just grind away taking notes as I go, besides the legs & lungs where starting to tell a story I’ve heard a few times before & home wasn’t just around that corner. Gags hung with me as well so it was good to pace off.
The morning was warming up nicely & the views off the sides of these climbs made it good place to be. The traffic was light & swung wide as they passed & the roads here did have that handy bit of bitumen shoulder through most of it.
The guys were waiting for us at Pideon Hill stop (official end point of ITT) , my recorded was 16min 19sec – a good base to work from I told myself. I forgot what everyone else got. After this regroup we rolled off to the Kangaroo Ground school where Dutchy & co where waiting.

At this point I elected to head for home. This was the second early morning I left behind my other half grumbling in bed as I rolled off for more adventure, so it seemed a good opportunity to get in some quality time for the rest of the day.
As they all turned off for Wastons Creek I headed west to Diamond Creek, Greensborough & home.

Saturday morning I rode out to Beach Rd with a few blokes from work, down to Mordialloc & back. Nice easy going ride sure, but this ride, the BR ride with the a.b peeps takes in some good climbing, great descents & all wrapped up in good looking neighbourhood, certainly pales the well tread path long the bay side.

(PS: I might’ve mixed the names up in the RR, apologies)

Full time study has meant that I haven't ridden as much lately and I suspect
that I'd simply fall over on the hills around Dandenong. Riding the 30-35km
from West Footscray out to Burwood is a substantial effort for me and on a
not-very-steep section on Burwood Hwy I'm hard pressed not to stop. I'm a
bit of a flatland wuss at the moment.

well Ive only been the once, but I enjoyed the ride, but it definately felt like a competitive ride the day I was there.... nothing wrong with that of course 🙂 pushes every one to go faster, although I must admit I expected it to be slightly more social, only reason why I have not been back is due to my personal training regime/goals, but definately looking forward to heading out that way again some time over summer.

Ive been on so many "social" rides, I quickly learned, that social means different things to different people, some people it means riding in a bunch chatting and smoking! others it means flogging yourself to death in the company of fellow devotees 🙂

I guess as long as everyone is aware what can transpire.. and the small number of "rules" are followed..... thats where you need that assigned Ride leader 🙂

    Great Ride though!
