Buying a group set

well at merlin is already with a good discount, i think 680 usd. (without shipping) is a fair price for that gruppo, however the real price they list is similar to the price you get for the Ultegra gruppo on excelsports, which is also at sale, some physical shops, depending where you live, carry these kind of items once the new lines come in, and then you could get an even better discount, and there is ebay of course,

Thanks for the info but what I really meant to ask was has anyone bought something off of the 2 sites? If so are they reputable... also... I am only interested in the Shimano 105 5700 Black..

Plus...Ribble and Merlin has it for 566 us dollars. I have tried to find a better price, but cannot. I have never ordered anything from them so I was wondering if anybody else has.

oh...one more thing...I know the Durace and Ultegra are "better", but they are lighter. This is for my dad, who is very large. He needs the strength of the 105's as he won't be racing any time soon! lol

lighter doesn't compromise strength, otherwise there would be no point coming up with better gruppos, that's why they are more expensive, better manufacturing technology and more research is required,

The 105's are much more durable than the Ultegras...Every bike mechanic I have talked to has told me that. The main reason Durace and Ultegra are more expensive is because they are lighter. We are going to buy 105s because the new 105s shift as good as the Durace at more than half the cost...Regardless...do you know the reputation of the two sites listed? I really need to learn to ask questions better.

You need to talk to a better grade of mechanics. Ultegra has never been known as a group that is less than durable.

If you scroll down on this web site, you'll see a whole list of groupsets. I find the Deore M590 V-brake trekking groups very interesting. If you're not in Europe, you don't have to pay VAT so the price is even lower. Heck, if you bought an inexpensive frame and wheels, you'd have a pretty good deal.

Ribble has it for 566 US dollars. Ultegra would be wasted on me. I don't really want to argue...again...my bad...I don't know how to ask the right question. All I really want to know is do you know anything about the reputation of the two sites we discussed?

You need to actually go to the site and see what the price is before you assault my math skills. OH and by the way...a Shimano USA rep actually listened to me and told me that due to my size and the level of riding that I do the best thing for my purposes was the new 105s because they would probably last longer. I am sorry that I am not (and apparently the Shimano rep, as well) as smart as you, but I think that I will go with what the maker of the product says...but really...thanks for the input.

You and dad won't go wrong with any of it, both the 105 or DA is built well and will probably last just as long as you. I have put lots of aggresive miles on both groups in races and in the wet with no problems. Like anything mechanical it just needs to be maintained well which for the most part just means keeping the chain relatively clean and well lubricated.
