I live in Dundee so normally start off with Tiso in Dundee. If I don't
like what they have I go to Mountainman (or whatever the name is this
week) in Perth to have a go at some other brands. Not because Tiso is
better than any other shop but it is local and good enough.
The problem I have with Tiso is that they often don't do a size 7.5 in the
(women's) model I want. If you come at a quiet time staff is likely to
have time to talk to you and help you try on everything, and many of them
are active outdoors people themselves.

There's a lack of choice of boot retailers with a large selection but
after just having bought new winter boots, i'd recommend Tiso. The
sales person was a great help and even gave us a few extra handy tips
for cleaning, without being a pushy sales person. They all seem to have
proper hands on experience and use a lot of the products themselves.
We're closest to the Stirling store.

Try Mountain Supplies or Craigdon Mountain Sports, both in Perth

Tiso also have a new store in Blackford right next the main A9 road.

Graigdon in Perth will not allow you you to try anything at home and
get a refund if it doesn't suit. Their policy seems to be exchange or
credit note only, unless they have changed it recently.

Mountain Supplies in Perth I have found helpful.

And on the first Monday of the month (that'd be tomorrow) they have
a discount night for local clubs, so if you're in a local club
wander along with your membership card at, IIRC, 6:30 pm and you'll
get a discount of typically 15%.

Quite so, though note the discount evenings are typically /not/
quiet. But you can try on at a quiet time and have the things put
aside.

My other usual port of call is Braemar Mountain Sports. Not so
local, but I'm passing through Braemar often enough that the staff
know me and offer me coffee etc., and they do know their stuff and
have a healthy attitude to customer satisfaction.

Thanks to all of you - I checked my old boots on Sunday morning and
found one of them had developed a ridge at the back of my heel hence the
problems, so I took myself to Tiso in Dundee (thanks, had no idea there
was one there!) and spent a couple of hours trying boots and standing
around in the best ones with various insole combinations. Have ended up
with a pair of Raichle which should be OK with a heel pad, so far as one
can tell in 10 minutes testing in the shop.

If there's a problem I'll go to Edinburgh when their boot fitting
specialist is in.

You have to be joking. My feet are hard to fit - there is *no* way I am
buying boots I cannot try on. The most important thing is boots that
fit - a great deal is way down the list.
