  1. Hi

    I've got to get a speed sensor of a set of carbon forks. Cable ties have been used. They are very tight. The forks are carbon. Anyone got an suggestions for the best way to cut the ties without damaging the forks?

    I have a shneaking suspicion that the answer is very carefully but I'm hoping that an experienced expert is going to give me the workshop secret 😄

  2. I use Diagonal Cutters from my electronics bench.

    Yup, and don't try to slide it under the tie itself. Just cut the knobby thingie.

  6. Personally, I'd use a 0.5-2 watt IR laser focused to a defraction limited spot and built into a feedback loop controlled by a sensor that measures reflected energy. By picking the right sensor--one with a quick rise time and high sensitivy--you should be able to tune the feedback loop to shut the laser off before any damage is done to the fork.

    Ya mean that the hobby knife that I have been using for 40 years is not the right tool? I guess I'll have to go out and buy a 0.5 - 2 watt IR laser and spend 4+ years in college to figure out how to cut a plastic cable tie. Lets see, $1.99 versus $45,000 + (whats a 0.5-2 watt IR laser cost?)

    In all reality though, a small flat screwdriver is all you need to unlock the little buggers, and you usually can reuse them again if you're in a pinch.

  8. Hmm. My cable ties around the fork for the cyclecomp sensor has little gaps where the cable tie inserts into the neck loop thing.

    I usually just snip there where the tie is furthest from the fork.

  9. Sorry the original post was a bit paranoid (its a brand new bike so I'm a bit paranoid). I'm not used to carbon fibre but from everything I've read it seems like it needs to be treated carefully e.g. its strong if whole and healthy but not so good if scratched broken etc. I finally worked out what to do with diagonal cutters. If I'd used scissors or a knife or a screwdriver I would probably just end up scratching or gouging the forks (i'm a bit clumsy). There really was no space at all. The person who fitted the speed sensor had been thorough!

  10. Nope the little gaps were missing. The fitter had been thorough!

    Somewhat embarrasingly however my GF took one look at the fork and gently worked the sensor down it (the forks taper quite strongly) and lo and behold there was plenty of space to snip.

    Talk about a lesson in how to look really stupid. 🙄
