  1. Can anyone tell me how many calories are burned per hour walking at a
moderate to faster than moderate pace?
    Thanks in Advance,

Fitday says with my metabolism it would burn 236 calories per hour.

My calculations put it at exactly 212.54 calories, no more, no less .

Calories burned depend on the weight of the person involved. A heavier
person *will* burn more calories then a smaller person doing the same walk.

  5. It depends on how fast you walk, how much you weigh, how efficient you are
at walking, among myriad other factors.

Even more importantly, you'll never be able to walk enough to make up for
    the amount you overeat.

This is untrue. I have lost 79 pounds in the last eight months. I am a
male, 49, and started out at 275 pounds. I walk hard 30-60 minutes a day.
The is the only exercise I do other than a normal work day sitting at a
desk. I eat good portions but I have stayed with the Atkins induction phase
at all times because it keeps my blood sugars normal. I am type 2.

Which part is untrue? I don't see any contradictions here....

  8. So you are eating "good portions" of maintenance calories or less.

Was there a point you wished to make?

  9. Not enough data.

You really need something like the following:
    Sex:
    Age:
    Height:
    Weight:

That's just to make a good estimate.

If you're REALLY interested, you might get a step counter. Then you can
    get a pretty good estimate.

-Hollywood, averaging over 10K steps/day this month, at 14 steps to a
calorie, and ~2500 steps to a mile.

  10. The treadmills in the gym I use have a "calories used" readout and I
assume the formula uses weight, time, speed and incline tho' what the
result actually means I don't know. It's probably a useful meaure of
relative effort. If I walk for 45 minutes at 4 mph with a gradually
increasing incline it shows about 600 calories used.

  11. Hrm 200 calories per mile. That's 10-20 steps to the calorie.
Plausible, but I wouldn't trust a machine at the gym unless it asks for
    weight or measures heart rate.

-Hollywood, who gets ~15 steps to the calorie.

You have to enter your weight and it measures heart rate. Nonetheless
I agree with you in not really trusting a gym machine, but I think it
gives a reasonable measure of relative effort. When I started using
the treadmill a couple of years ago 45 minutes was getting me a reading
of about 400. Having increased the speed and the rate at which I
increase the incline I now get about 600. It's a bit like body fat %,
noone knows what it really is, but if you have it checked by a reliable
method (ie skinfold) by the same person the relative increase or
decline is significant. In your will you might stipulate that your
body be rendered down to establish the precise fat % so that your
grieving (or otherwise) loved ones would have the satisfaction of
knowing the truth, and ask that the Kansas Board of Education have the
info relayed to you via the Intelligent Designer.

  13. Definitely the right way to use the reading. Same thing with my step
counter, my scale, the body fat # it gives, whatever. Track the
changes, don't sweat the number too much.

When I die, I'm having myself compressed into a diamond. If my
relatives want any of my fortune, they will have to wear my compressed
self around for five years. Otherwise it all goes to NPR and Richard
Dawkins. Tell that to the Kansas School Board and their Blind
    Watchmaker.

    Rock On.
