  1. As I continue to move from Shimano to Campagnolo I am getting close to
replacing the Dura-Ace 9s RD and cassette. I currently have Record 10s
Ergos, Chorus UT crank and Dura-Ace 12-27 cogs using a Jtek gizmo. I want to
keep my wheels for now and buy a Wheels modified cassette, 11-25 or 11-27.
    So, the questions:

Does the short cage Campy RD work with 34/50 and 11-27 or will I need a
    medium cage?

Is the Chorus RD really worth nearly double the price of the Centaur? From
what I can tell the only difference, other than a few grams, are the better
    pulleys on the Chorus.

    Thanks!

I have used a 53-39 crankset with 13-28 cassette in the past. 29
total tooth difference. Worked perfectly fine. Your looking at 32
total tooth difference. Almost cerainly would work fine. But if you
have not bought any rear derailleur yet, I'd suggest the medium to
remove all doubts. Unless appearance is an issue and the medium cage
rear derailleur will make you look like a Fred. Then of course you
must go with the short cage.

Chorus has better pulleys? No kidding? Must be a new thing. My 1998
Chorus rear derailleur uses the same pulleys and steel bushings and
steel cover plates as my 2004 Centaur and 2003 Centaur and 2005 Veloce
and 2006 Veloce rear derailleurs. I have a couple extra rear
derailleurs accumulated through the years. They all shift the same.
I cannot tell whether I am using a 9 or 10 speed Chorus or Centaur or
Veloce short, medium, or long cage rear derailleur on the bikes.

Do I understand it correctly that you still have to buy the RD yet? Why
not buy a medium cage RD then and don't have to worry anymore in the future?
Yes a short cage RD will shift that cassette.

As far as I know all pulleys are the same.

    I'm using a short cage Chorus 07 on 50/34 - 12/25, wich works, but i
would defenatly go with a medium cage on 11/27. The chain is very
tight when using 50-23 and too tight for my taste in 50-25.

As with the current Record rear derailleur, the Chorus version comes with
new pulleys redesigned to increase the quietness of the drivetrain. 202g.

Make the next (replacement) chain a bit longer.

Belive me i've done that, then 34-13 has very litle tension, and
    12-25 too little tension.

  7. No kidding???

Someone could go download the Campy parts catalog and see if the pulleys
have the same part number or not...

Personally, if all I wanted was performance and not the snoot factor or
the black carbon outer parallelogram piece, I'd go with the Centaur.

Short cage is fine. Rememebr you have a 50t big ring, not a 53.

RD-RE-700 for Chorus, Centaur, Veloce and Mirage...same pulleys.
Record are different. Per the 2007 parts catalog

  10. OK, I just checked the catalog...

For 2007, Record has pulleys that are 8.8mm wide, numbered RE-600.
Chorus, Centaur, and a few levels down have pulleys that are 8.4mm wide,
and they are ALL part number RE-700.

Anyone venture to guess what the wider Record pulleys do that the
narrower ones do not (other than cost more for replacement)?

Centaur has had the carbon outer plate added for 2007 IIRC.

Thanks, Peter, I had hoped you would chime in. My old Dura-Ace RD, short
cage, works fine with the 50/34 and 12-27 setup. I figured the Campy would
do the same. I added a '06 Centaur FD a few months ago and somehow feel
obligated to replace the Shimano rear. I still plan on waiting for when my
current cassette needs replacing and will then add the new RD.

On that note. How are the Wipperman chains with Campy? The basic one is
cheaper and comes with the neat quick link.

Use the 5.9, shimano-esque one. Little less noisy that the 6.2mm one,
same dimension as the 2008/7 'Ultra' chains from Campagnolo.

Because of the carbon cage for Record. I think to keep the chain as
far away from these as possible.

huh, yes you are right...thought it was 5.9 but yes, the thinner one.
