They got a lot of complaints about car adverts a few years ago (back in
the days when I used to read it). ISTR the editor at the time (Tony
Farrelly, I think) had a few words with Future Publishing's marketing
dept and persuaded them that selling advertising space for cars was a
good way /not/ to sell cycling magazines.

Perhaps if they've started printing car ads again, it's time for
subscribers to write in and complain again.

They have them in some MTB mags as well, and it annoys me as well!
Particularly as the cars advertised in MTB mags seem to be these big
4x4s which are hardly compatible with the greener aspects of cycling.

cyclist touring club (beer bellies & Lycra) posing on top of a french
col with their sag vehicle. Caption" towing vehicle of the year' 😉

Coincidently, I was watching the telly this evening and saw an advert
for a Corsa that had an integrate bike carrier. I bit of digging around
came up with the following. Could be a handy addition if/when we get a
new car.

Interesting idea. I wonder what the weight penalty is?

The cynic in my wonders how long it will be before we see either a carrier
equipped car with an aftermarket carrier attached and the integrated one not
used or we see an aftermarket modification to allow even more bikes to be
carried.

But, in the end, it's a Vauxhall which simply puts me off and a Corsa which
puts me off more. Clarkson has a lot to answer for there!

Be aware that the bike rack replaces the spare wheel!

I have a (BMW) Mini that has no spare wheel. It's the only car I've had a
puncture in in the last 25 years! Thankfully I made it to Kwik Ripoff
with the screw still in the tyre - if I'd used the goop they supply I've
had to buy a new tyre. My wife's Galaxy also has no spare, so I'm expecting
a rash of punctures.

used to be part of the MOT test.

it's just strongly advised. There again, I believe you're now advised

AFAIK if your car has a spare, then it has to be 'legal', but you
don't have to carry one.

An integrated bike rack is no reason to put yourself through the misery that
is driving a Vauxhall Corsa.

But, given the number of off-road bikes that are driven somewhere nice
in or on the back of a big 4x4, not necessarily a poor choice of targeting
by the advertisers.

That would explain why my boot was left undisturbed! This MOT was done
by a garage with a good reputation for being thorough, which is why I
was mildly surprised that they hadn't checked the spare. Now I know!
It certainly used to be a legal requirement because I've had MOT
failures from a dodgy spare in my youth!

That has to be one of the daftest ideas ever. Except that some bits of
motorway already have this in places. So you're quite happily using the
hard shoulder as indicated, then up comes a junction and you need to be
out of the hard shoulder rather rapidly when you realise that you will
otherwise be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or that the car you
can see ahead is actually stopped with hazard lights on.

Nope, not a good idea.
