Cara Cara Oranges

Anyone every heard of them? I bought them on a whim at the grocery store, because there was a sign next to the grocer's picture saying, "You're going to love these. I guarantee it." I thought if I don't like them I'll return the rest. They were SO good. They were seedless and the flesh was on the reddish orange side. So sweet. Normally, I split an orange between the kids for breakfast, but we each wanted a whole one of our own. Lynne

Anyone every heard of them? I bought them on a whim at the grocery store,
because there was a sign next to the grocer's picture saying, "You're going
to love these. I guarantee it." I thought if I don't like them I'll return
the rest. They were SO good. They were seedless and the flesh was on the
reddish orange side. So sweet. Normally, I split an orange between the
kids for breakfast, but we each wanted a whole one of our own.

Right, but look at the first definition, which confirms your interpretation
of "cara": Costly, expensive.

They've been around for about 4-5 years here in SoCal....Ralph's (div of
Kroger) was the first chain to sell them. Cara Cara is a blend of orange &
grapefruit from Texas. Very large & juicy.

I know them as "blood oranges" and they don't last long in our house, since

It also has various meanings in Spanish. What makes you think it's Italian,
especially considering the history of California? :-)

Lynne,
I love the CaraCara and other pink/red oranges. The first time I tried them
was about 6 or 7 years ago when Whole Foods had a huge display of "Volcano
Oranges". I had to buy them, just because they sounded so good in the
description...it was love at first slurp.
They seem to have a much shorter season, but they are worth the wait 🙂
