Carrying Bikes on really Cheap Flights

It certainly is on Easy jet and Ryanair, although opinion varies on whether
they need to be in a bag/box or not. Easyjet is free if in a bag, Ryanair is
£15 each way (and does not cover damage so get a good bike insurance policy)
so bumps up the 99p fares a bit but is still the cheapest way of getting one
bike to the continent other than riding it.
Britannia is about £20-30 (same as a pair of skis I think) but not sure if
one or both ways. I think all the scheduled airlines take them but not sure
about cost

I'd suggest getting something in writing - even if it's only some
printout from their terms & conditions. I've spent some time in an
easyjet check-in queue behind a chap with a bike where the
check-in-person simply refused to believe they carried bicycles, and
wouldn't check him in. It didn't particularly help that english
clearly wasn't his first language, but it's not teh sort of thing
you wnat to find out at check-in.

I think she eventually suggested he went and bought a ticket on
another airline.

How long ago and where was this?
I did once have an Easyjet check in person who had no idea what to do with a
bike at Schiphol, but the airline definitely takes them and did right from
the start in 1997.
It is not possible to book bikes on Easyjet AFAIK, I never have.
Apparently Ryanair have imposed a 15 bike limit on flights which has angered
Etape riders going to Pau or wherever..

For packaging it is recommended that:
-The handle bar is rotated 90 degrees and is tightened in this position
-The pedals are removed
-The tires are air empty
It is also recommended that the bicycle is packed (special plastic bag or
box) to protect the bicycle and prevent it from damaging other luggage.

I once had a bit of a problem with check in staff not knowing the rules
about bikes - they tried to charge me about £100 for three bikes when they
were covered by the 'sporting goods' allowance. Fortunately I carry a
printout of relevant conditions from the website with me, which quickly
solved the problem.

was talking to some clubmates who did it a few years ago; the hills are ok
unless you get stuck in a big bunch, apparently the locals do it on Dutch
style hybrids.

Not exactly what you would call a really cheap flight is it? but for the
convenience, speed and the joy of flying from Soton I would go for it. And
such a dinky little plane, like the ones that go to the Channel Islands.
Ryanair and EasyJet are no good, neither fly to Belgium from the South.
