It is much easier to clean it when you remove it. You also avoid getting chemicals and water in hubs as well.

Please don't blast it with a hose.
Even degreasing it while it's on the wheel risk running the degreaser into the hub.

Park Tool's GDC-1 cleaner brush works well.
You can even "floss" with a cotton rag while it is on the bicycle.
If you really want it clean all the way, it is best to remove the cassette. Don't be afraid to use a neutral detergent solution and a brush.

Definately do not blast with a hose while your cassette is
attached to your wheel. You'll blast the grease right out of
the bearings. If you want to clean it on your bike, pour
some degreaser on a rag and use the rag to "floss" the
cassette. You can use a nylon brush to get at really tough
spots. Removing the cassette and soaking is usually a faster
way to clean a real dirty cassette.

I would recommend removal and cleaning. I find citrus
degreaser works well, and rinses with water. I get citrus
degreaser at Home Depot for about $6 a gallon.

There's no need to remove it. Just degrease it and sprinkle
it with a hose. Don't blast anything on a bike with water!!
You can also use a toothbrush or a special brush from, for
example, BBB (which is also called a toothbrush..) to clean
the cassette.

I save my old cotton tshirts just for cassette flossing.
Works fine.

I just use a brush and a strong detergent (like Simple
Green), then wash away with a hose, then dry off with rags,
including between the sprockets. If you don't get detergent
or water into the seals, it's fine, a little splashing won't
hurt, directing a high pressure hose directly at a seal may
cause your grease to get contaminated, necessitating a

they're caustic and can attack aluminum. Rinse thoroughly,
if you want to soak things, do it in paint thinner. The only
thing I remove from the bike to clean is the chain.

Best way is to remove it, get some mineral spirits, a
paint brush and scrub it. Samo for the rings, the chain
and the pulleys..

I'll weigh in on the side of removing it to clean it. This
has two advantages; it prevents contamination and degreasing
of the freehub's bearings, and it allows you to more easily
do a good job of getting the crud out of the cassette than
could be done on the bike.

Personally, I'd soak it in a butyl-based degreaser and then
hose it out; this works really well for me, and doesn't
involve the use of any flammable solvents. The same tactic
would probably work with a citrus-based cleaner, though that
might attack the surface finish of the sprockets.

Yeah, but below D-A you can leave it on the bike, below 105
you can take it to a car wash, below Sora, you don't really
need to clean anything.

Razor blade. Remove the wheel and set it on a full-size
round garbage can cassete-side-up. hold the razor blade up
to the cog you wish to clean as if you are going to scrape
it. Now spin the cassete with he other hand. A butter knife
works too.

Now flossing it with a rag only takes a few seconds and only
requires/dirties one rag.
