Chain Stay Protectors

Some of those carbon fiber jobs are pretty stiff, and may not have the best adhesive on them.

I got a set of clear 3M protectors in various sizes and shapes from my LBS and put on a carbon protector, and then went over it with a big clear piece from the 3M, which has REALLY strong adhesive, and is a big, tough, thick piece of material; although it is almost invisible.

It holds the carbon on, and it protects it.

3M is more expensive than the other stuff, but I think it is hands-down the best adhesive and plastic out there.

I have a Colnago Dream Plus and I tried to uses a carbon fibre chain stay protector on the stay but the dam thing will not stay stuck. The stay is more oval then rounded and the protector will not stay stuck, only on one edge but not the other..

I prepared the surface correctly and removed all oil/grease, I'm nervous of using super glue as it might eat the paint surface. Anyone else have this problem and if so how did they manage to stick the thing down.

Same problem. I put three zip ties on the thing when I installed it, hoping to prevent the problem. Two days after I cut the zips off, ffwip--it curled right up.

I like the idea of the 3m protectors....

I'll second the 3M stuff. Slap it on, forget it. Problem taken care of.

I have done some Googling, and I think the stuff I got was ScotchCal.

I think one of the tricks is to make the piece you cut big enough to wrap completely over the top and bottom of your chainstay, so that the edges adhere nicely on the back side.

And as I recall now, I think the piece I got was Not chainstay shaped, but that I had to cut it myself.
