I second, third, and forth that suggestion....
SRAM's powerlink takes ALL EXCUSES out of chain cleaning at least once a week (and after every especially mucky ride).

If you don't know what a "powerlink" is... it's a link that you can 'break apart' with your bare hands, to take the chain off. And reattach with the same 'tools'. The link seems as strong as any 'regular' link - at least to me.

Go to GOOGLE.COM to find and visit SRAM's website. It's very informative.

Also, for lubrication I strongly recommend Rock & Roll Extreme lube for mtb's. It lubes the best while leaving your chain the very cleanist - SPARKLING. Visit:

I buy the cheapest 9 speed SRAM chain, poach it in paraffin wax (with a few shots of dry graphite for flavor) for 20 mins or so. Then pull it out with tongs, run a clean rag down it once, and leave it to dry for another 20...

Then I slap that baby on and take a quick spin to peel off any remaining exterior wax.

Lasts for 400 miles with just tepid water cleanings (shaken in a 2L plastic bottle).

And then I chuck it for the next cheap SRAM.

I'm not as an afficionado as you, Coolworx. And, are you suggesting that breakage occurs at the powerlink?

Thanks for the advice on the Sram chains ,I will use the 58 but I am going to give the 9 speed hollow pin version a try also. What is the difference between the 89 and 99 hollow pin models?

Nope, it's a '94 Rockhopper with a stock 21 speed setup. I use a SRAM PC48 since I don't do extreme riding. Just asphalt and the easy trail around the lake.

I'm absolutely suggesting ditching the chain after 4 or 5 hundred miles.

The $20 bucks is worth it to save your drivetrain. Even a 'minimally' worn chain will begin to eat cassettes and cogs.

Think of it as an oil change.
