cheapish HRM

quite good. His cheapest (Polar A1) is $120 at the moment.

I'd beware the real cheap no-name ones you find in Tandy and [censored] Smith
(non-Polar, Timex etc) for under $100. I bought one for my mother's
power-walking and it has been replaced under warranty twice already. I'm
on my second Polar without a problem...

I bought a good one on eBay about a year ago. Spent about $160 on a
Polar Accurex. It does everything I need.

I purchased a combined HRM and speedo from the US for about A$100
including an outrageous amount of postage. It was the HRM 1000 from
http://www.supergo.com/. I believe it was originally a Polar model
which became obsolete and was then produced in a rebadged from by
SuperGo.

Having said that, I just checked the SuperGo site and they no longer
have that model. However they have others. Worth checking out...

Actually they were originally Vetta HR-1000s. I have three Vettas and
two Supergos and have been really happy with them. Some are over ten
years old and still working.

Too bad if they're no longer available. I just emailed Supergo asking
if they've discontinued that model. Hopefully it's just temporary.

ALDI

About $50. The people I know with them seem happy, and didn't want all
the bells and whistles (and associated cost) of Polars. Probably not
as good, but may well be good enough. Never used one myself.

[censored] smith have them for $79 - not as cheap as the ALDI ones but worth a
look as well.

I might pick one of them up as I have been looking for one as well so
I'll let you know what it's like if you are interested?

Oh BTW - the dse one is an Atech which has had a bit of negative press
but by the looks of it your milage with them may vary..

The DSE A-Tech one is the model I bought for my oldies (bit hard to
justify a Polar 720i for them..). The cheststrap is rather chunky, but I
figured that's fine, its cheap. But it has been back for exchange a few
times within 12 months, which is a few times more than I would think
acceptable.

Seriously, I've seen a Polar A1 for $80 recently (on sale). I've had two
Polars now (admittedly not the cheapies) and never had a problem with
them. Spend the money - it's worth it.

Been trying to find where I saw that one on sale and came across this

First reaction was - not a bad price, then I noted the address. I used
to live in that building!!! It's a block of apartments - he's on the 2nd
floor. So obviously not a company with a huge amount of backing (or
overhead, hence the prices I guess...).
