A friend of mine out here decided he would ride Mt. Elbert. It's a
14er. there are very few who dare to take bikes up to the top of 14ers.
Probably because the trails get very nasty and steep as you go above
tree line. As was the case here, they pretty much hiked-a-bike to the
summit. Hikers thought they were nots haveing never seen bikes up that
high.

Well, they point the bikes downhill and Terry's hydros failed. Here was
the result:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TBTwar3fy4

He was going 35 mph at the crash point and ended with a few scrapes and
a broken helmet.

Two contributors to this newsgroup did Mt Elbert with on their Sears Free
Spirits a couple of years ago with results much better than that.

Um, because he looked down at his computer and saw 35 mph.

That's what I'd do and I've hit 45+ on the SB going down the east side of
Dallas Divide on CO 62 (way past being spun out on the 44x11)

Yup. The camera really flattened this one out. It was a 30% incline.
He got up to speed very quickly. In fact, he was behind the other guy
in the video. The other two had full storm trooper gear and he was all
XC (120mm). The other guy though he was being a wise ass when he blew
by him.

I can't imagine what I would have done in that situation.

I think you would have crashed. ;) Me too.

Damn. I guess I'll only do that on my SS with the Avid mechanical on the
front. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I knew the speed of my big crash of 2000 because my computer froze
upon impact. Not like me, who broke upon impact...

Both hydros failed? Eesh!

He looked like he was going stupid fast, especially as the trail
looked to bend almost 90 degrees based on where the camera holder was
standing. The fact that conditions were dry and the trail looked flat
doesn't sound like it would have allowed him to make a sharp left at
that speed.

Reminds me of myself....

I was once meeting some friends in a park to camp there overnight. I
had a big backpack on, with maybe 30-40lbs worth of stuff in it (tent,
bag, booze...). I was heading down a loose, sandy, steep downhill
alongside a fence. There's an opening in the fence through which the
trail makes a hard, bankless left. I didn't account well for the
weight on my back, which not only increased the braking distance but
also crept up my back threatening to endo me if I hit the brakes too
hard. Not a good combo.

I wound up launched off the trail into the trees. Comical.

Glad your friend is okay.

It does make a sharp bend where the guy was filming. If he didn't bail
where he did, all bets are off as to what would have been his physical
condition. They were already looking for a place to land the life flight.

No wonder he crashed, looking at his handlebar junk caused that crash.

You know it's a bad crash when your junk ends up on the handlebar.

Of course. Rule 1, protect the bike. Rule 2, protect the booze.

Not in order of importance, but I've been in the practice of

"my only choice was to try to cut off trail, perpendicular to
the fall line, and cut some speed (cyclo read 28mph)."
