Call the airline that you will be using. Each may have a different policy.

What bike weighs more than 50lb?
It all depends on the carrier.Here in the UK, there is a budget airline,
where tickets for most routes are available for 15UKP/25USD inc. taxes.
They do not charge anything to take a bike.Others who are full price have
been known to charge for bikes, as they take more time to load apparently.
Contact your carrier to find out what they do.

If it's the same one as I'm thinking of then they don't pay out much
when the baggage handlers trash your bike, either...

I called. On AA, its the usual $80 for an oversize piece of luggage, and
that covers you up to 110 lbs.

If you are smart, you will pack other stuff with your bike. You can fill
the voids in the box with clothes and some tools. That way you don't
have to worry about a separate suitcase. When you do this, you can get over
50 lbs.
