Down one side and up t'other..

On one side you can use Jacob's ladder, would not like to try the other
side. However if you can read a map I suggest you get the relevant Os
one, there are footpaths at the top. Indeed you could walk up the gorge
as far as Black Rock then follow the footpath right that will eventually
bring you back to the town.

Seemed a sensible question to me.

About 3 miles up the south rim of the Gorge, then down the north side.

The south side of the Gorge is owned by whoever owns the caves and the
attractions, however you do not have pay to climb Jacob's Ladder to
access this. A public footpath runs all the way from Cheddar itself
along the southern rim . Then cross the road and there is a waymarked
path through the National Trust property on the North rim. This isn't
marked on any OS maps.

IIRC the paths are both marked on the maps of the area displayed in
the car parks in Cheddar and you may get a leaflet in town. It is

although I repeat its free if you don't climb Jacob's Ladder.

If you go early in the morning (i.e. before 8 a.m.). my favourite walk
is up the Gorge itself. Too much traffic later on though.
