Front derailleurs are all interchangeable among brands. The movement
of the front derailleur is controlled in the shift lever. STI gets you
index front derailleur. Ergo gets you ratchet front derailleur. Bar
end and down tube get you even finer ratcheting or pure friction. I
use a Shimano 105 triple front derailleur, bought cheap, with Centaur
Ergo shifters.

Possibly. Shimano is designed to "index", whereas Campy is espected to
use with a notched variable shifter. There may be some disagreememt
between the Shimano shifter & the Campy mech, making setup difficult.

Then again, it may work well...

Not true. The arm length and cable position on Campag front derailleurs
make use with STI not nearly as good as with a shimano FD. I have tried
more than once to use a Campag FD with STI-mostly because we didn't
have the called for FD, either cuz of clamp/brazeon issues or
whatever), and it rweally worked poorly. Now the other way around,
using a anything FD with ERGO, that does indeed work fine.

On a classic double without mitigating factors most riders
probably couldn't tell the difference between a Record front
and a DA front with Ergo shifters.

With STi shifters however, Shimano remains inexplicably
committed to front index. The DA front cage is specifically
ramped to get the closest thing to 'performance' out of that
system and would be the best choice.
