I certainly had no trouble with mine, even without special tools. That is, unless you consider a
reubber mallet a proper headset installation tool. Now, it's only been on the bike for 5000 miles,
so maybe my poor installation will come back to get me, but I doubt it.

I'm not at the shop right now to look at the special tooling, but I believe the reason for the
special bushings etc when installing a Chris King is simply to make absolutely certain you don't put
any pressure on the bearings themselves. If you're careful, this probably isn't a huge deal.

But installing a headset with a rubber mallet is as likely (or more so) to damage the frame as the
headset, which would be a real crime. If the head cups start going in at an angle, they can ovalize
the headtube, which is not a good thing. Usually this would show up as a problem pretty quickly
though (loose headset), so if things are fine now at 5k miles, my guess is that they'll stay that
way. However, as they say, installing a headset into a high-end frame without the right tooling is
not something I'd try at home!

your head tube should be faced prior to fitting the king as the bearings are sealed cartridge and
need to rotate perpendicular to ensure they dot bind.

I didn't need to use any special Kind installation tools when I installed mine and its working fine.

I've installed a couple with my regular park press, and one has >10,000 mi now, no problem. I
didn't have the special King adapter, but having installed maybe 20-25 headsets, I didn't really
see the need...

What I meant was King installation tools. ie, I never needed any special King installation tools to install my King headset. In fact, I've installed 3 King headsets already using regular Park tools. I think King's just trying to make more money off their stuff.
