Cilantro does *not* taste like soap...

I like it. My wife hates it. If there is cilantro in a dish, then my
wife won't eat it. It's a table condiment at our house.

I think there are other foods that are like this, too. Very subjective
flavors. Must be genetic differences in taste buds, or something.

Not really, I'm pretty well in the middle on it. In various dishes I
find it ok, but I can do without it as well, and when tasted
stand-alone, I do find it rather "soapy".

I'm not a "hate it" person, and certainly not a "love it" one. I'd
say, mildly dislike. I don't mind the leaves used fairly sparingly in
a tomato based salsa, but the stems, I really don't like.

As it should be. Many things should be treated as condiments,
including things that I like a lot, like chopped tomato or onion, and
sour cream. No one should EVER put mustard, ketchup, mayo, or salad
dressing on a sandwich that they are not personally going to eat.

Same goes for various other things. Saccharin tastes bitter to me; it
didn't to my mother. Broccoli tastes much worse to some people than to
others -- and I'm talking about what their taste buds report, not about
their preferences.

Cilantro was like heroin for me.

The first time I tasted it, I didn't like it but I kept thinking about
it, so I tried it again and again and again. Pretty soon I got to the
point where I couldn't get enough and now I demand it.

I love cilantro, and I really, REALLY love leftover broccoli that I turn
into a salad chopping up the broccoli into bites, adding minced red
onion, sliced cherry tomatoes, dressing in good flavorful extra virgin
olive oil, kosher salt, fresh cracked pepper and a generous splash of
red wine vinegar. Toss and let rest a few minutes and I've got a lovely
salad of leftover broccoli. Sometimes I add a bit of garlic, sometimes
not. We fight over this here...maybe I should just make the broccoli for
the sole purpose of keeping it as a "leftover" sometime??

Hubby and I were just discussing this in regards to black-eyed peas. I
tried one last night for the first time. ICK, EW, and any other nasty word
available. He thinks they're delicious, I think they taste like *ss. Hubby
asked, why do some people have the taste bud to hate these peas? I asked
back, why do some folks dislike cilantro? I'll eat cilantro to the hilt,
but please, leave out the black-eyed peas!
