Did you look under the bottom bracket shell?

yup, looked everywhere on the frame....it is definitely not on the outside as far as i can tell. it there is one, i'm guessing it is internal somewhere, which is not something i have seen before.

check also the rear dropouts (the insides) and under the chainstays.

Worst scenario is it's a stolen bike with the SN filed off.

i had a cinelli unica, and i'm sure the only frame number of any description was a hologram sticker at the top of the seat tube (just below seatstay junction), with a 4 digit number on it.

Why don't you contact Cinelli directly (or the importer in your country) to see if they can help you?

thanks for all the replies and i did get in touch with cinelli directly and they told me after checking around that not all the frames that year (which is 2002) had serial numbers. there were 2 different frame suppliers apparently and so there it is.....phew!
