Cleat wear?

    Hi all,
    This year, after an absence of a few years I got back on the bike seriously. The one major change I made was to use Look pedals instead of Time. I used time pedals for years previously and had no problem with wear - seeing as they are metal, that would seem obvious, but the Look ones are plastic.

    So my question is: How do I know the cleats need replacing?
    I ask because my right shoe has started to make an annoying 'squeak' this week. It checked the pedal, and shoe and they are fine. The cleat looks a bit worn, but not overly so I think. There is no movement between cleat and shoe.

    Is this 'squeaking' a symptom of a worn Look cleat? Also, but it could be my imagination, it feels as though there is more lateral movement on pedal before clicking out.

    I know these are sort of dumb questions, but as I said previously I only sued metal time cleats.

    There are actually three little holes in your cleats. When they wear down, that is you can't see them anymore it is time to replace them.

    If you want to make them last a bit longer, get some cleat covers.

    Sqeaking is a symptom of Look cleats in general. If you're using the older style cleats without the white Teflon inserts, you have to keep the contact points well lubricated.

    Usually you'll start to feel some serious looseness or even breakage of one of the rear tabs. Cleat covers are a great idea if you do any walking, but the best idea is to avoid walking in them.

    Looks like it's the Look "squeak" that you say is quite common then. I don't have the teflon inserts, so I must put some lube on them. I wonder why it's only started now after about 5000 km?

    Also I don't tend to walk on the cleats very much at all...just from the bike locker to my apartment twice a day = about 80 metres.

    As for the 3 holes, I don't see them at all. Are they on all Look cleats? Because I don't think mine are so worn that I can't even see the remnants of the holes.

    You can see two of the wear indicator holes in the picture of the delta cleat at the right of the page. They're just aft of the rectangular mounting holes.

    Christ! Thanks for the pic artmichalek....looks like I need new cleats afterall! There is no evidence that there were ever holes there on my cleats at all, and here was me thinking mine weren't worn too bad :eek: ha ha.
