I think it's a great idea. If you can, and want to compete, go for it. I've had a coach for about two years now and it has made a big difference. Not only in power gains, but I no longer have to try to figure everything out and make stupid mistakes. Relative to cycling, it's the best thing I've done. -

It's a good idea!
I have been training and reading about training principles for years, and thought I had a pretty good idea on how to go about it myself. This spring I nevertheless decided to give professional coaching a try. I have not been disappointed.
I started with my coach in the beginning of March this year, and had a laboratory test confirming the stagnation that I've seen for the last couple of years. Today, I did my first "post-coach" laboratory test with a 17% improvement in my VO2max! I feel more powerful, I go faster, my breathing is more controlled. Am I a satisfied customer? Oh, yes. A coach can also help you with goal development, motivation, any problems you might run into, race strategy and analysis, etc.
Just make sure you don't choose a coaching program that is made for the masses, but a program where the coach actually has the time to get to know *you*, your goals and your progress.

Well, if you were to play HS football you'd have a football coach. And if you were to run track, you'd have a track coach. Why not get a cycling coach if that's what you want to pursue?
