try going along the yarra tail thru Burnley and getting the MelbWater barge exit/entry delay. Have stood there at the back of 100-200 riders!

likewise cutting through the Exhibition Buildings carpark (Carlton) has got more interesting - used to be just me and one or two others cruising east-west, but now it's dozens heading in all directions.

The only downside is an apparent increase in cyclists with no idea of and/or regard for basic road rules or common sense. Hopefully they'll learn...

Off-topic, but had a thrill last week riding up Gertrude St to see a trandem coming the other way, serving as very functional and funky family transport! 🙂

Being one of those people that has recently joined the commuter ranks I find myself counting the number of bikes in the rack at work and checking out any new bikes when I see them. Today there are 6 bikes in the rack including a 2005 Iron Horse MK III Hollow Point Team MTB with two Nightflux lights mounted on the handlebars. tinyurl.comqzrlcOpen ↗ Looks like a nice bike.

I am thinking about volunteering to be a Ride to Work co-ordinator for my workplace but I think part of that is going to be finding a spot for another bike rack as the only one we have only holds 9 bikes and is out in the open. Given the range of bikes I see in the rack I think there are about 15 people who commute at various times during the week.

Yep, I r*n on my cycle off-days through the carlton gardens. More
[censored] than I can count riding through there - how much more clear
can they be than signs saying 'no bikes' and painted bikes with lines
drawn through them on the paths?
I get that you're going through the carpark, by the way.
Just a pain in the [censored] to be r*nning on a footpath in the pre-dawn
dark and having a low-seated, no-lighted, handlebar-helmeted "cyclist"
vacantly ride at me - when there are cycle paths on the edges of the
gardens. Worst thing is that I know that, to every other
walker/r*nner/then motorist, these are the tools that give me a bad
name as a cyclist (them and every other red-light-running lycra-clad
hooligan of course).

Speaking of dark people and dark places... I came close to taking out a goth chick one night on the bike path around Box Hill North... damn goths, they should be made to wear mini flashers.. even in the day...

Don't know whether you realise it, but the Carlton Gardens is a bit of a
sore point with northern suburbs commuters. The main cycle route, Canning
St, runs straight into the Gardens, with an obvious path to take cyclists
across to Elgin St. Many cyclists conributed to a review of the gardens'
management plan, seeking the creation of a designated cycle rout through the
Gardens, but all to no avail. Apparently a dominant pressure group on
council held more pwer than the voices of some hundreds of cyclists.

The petty rule is practically unenforcable. It would be good to simply
recognise the reality of what is happening, by making a route/s legal, then
concentrate on getting alll users - walkers, runners, picnickers and
cyclists to behave responsibly towards one another.

But then maybe I'm just being too sensible.

This is not correct. The current low observability color of choice is
stealth orange. Kathy and I were both involved in the initial trials
that proved that stealth orange is absolutely invisible

The real anti terrorist cops are out there armed to the teeth on stealth
orange bikes and moptorbikes.. in steatlh orange cars. Everyone sees
the black helecopters but no one sees the stealth orange ones.

I think your right about the stealth orange CARS, I've never seen an orange car.
But I have seen orange motorbikes and even more yellow ones.

Mind you, I'm still [censored] that I didn't see a harley EARLY over 15 years ago.
I may not be that representative.

Guilty as charged... But then, if a cyclist (I use the term knowing
that actual cyclists, as I think of them, are on the road going a lot
faster and with purpose) riding on a _footpath_ that has all but a neon
sign flashing 'no bikes' at all entrances to the park can't see me,
then screw them.

I'd probably agree that it would be better to be opened up to cyclists legally (likewise with Fitzroy gardens I reckon) - AFter all, the types who would abuse that by tearing through a 30kmh amongst pedestrian probably already do so anyway. I guess it just irks me to see a cyclist happily pedalling right over a 'no bikes' sign... A bit blatant.

Altho they also need to sort out what happens to cyclists at the Queensberry St end of the Gardens - We all sort of get spat out there with no clear, convenint, safe, legal way across that intersection.

As you've guessed, I'm not familiar with it from a commuter point of
view. But oh well, here goes - in my ignorance I'll rub the sore
point...
After Canning Street, turn left or right. Right will take you to
Rathdown street which has a very wide cycle lane running city bound on
it. Left will take you to Nicholson street. The 'footpath' that runs
along the edge of the park is a legal shared pathway IIRC. A designated
cycle-way through it would be good, though. My original post may not
have fully communicated what my main concern is (I probably didn't
emphasise it), that of the people tooling through there giving us all a
bad name by breaking the law so blatantly. If a way around this is to
change the law, fine.
Eddie, as for the Queensbury street end dumping you into an
intersection, that's what vicroads cycle lanes do statewide. They're
all smiles and wide cycle lanes until an intersection, the dangerous
bit, then they stop.
