Compact triple - which derailleur?

I ran a TA Zephyr compact triple (48/38/38) for over a year, using a *Dura
Ace* triple front derailleur. Work flawlessly for a couple thousand miles.

I'm running a Sugino compact triple (48-36-26) and I use a 105 triple
derailer with it with no problems. I have done this with Campy Ergo
shifters and with Shimano DT shifters, but not with STI, in case that
makes a difference.

I set up a Surly CrossCheck with a Sugino 46/36/26, Ultegra 9 speed brifters
and a 105 triple front derailleur. IIRC after much Googling that the 105 has
a little more range than the Ultegra triple front. Using an XT rear with a
SRAM 11-32. It all shifts very well. I originally ordered an XT front and
then learned (in time to cancel) that it wouldn't index properly with road
brifters. Thank you r.b.t

I have the same chain ring's on a Truvativ crank. I could not get the XT
derailleur to work properly. The inside of the derailleur cage hit the
middle chain ring as I shifted to the large ring. I switched to a
Centaur triple FD and it worked flawlessly.

In the set-up the OP asked about, 48/38/28 chainrings, most any shifter
compatible triple front der will work: 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace.

Most of the modern Shimano front mechs are designed for a 12t difference
between the middle and outer rings. I have a recent-vintage LX, and it
works well on a 36/48 and even better on 36/50 (26t granny on both).
Anything smaller and the cage would most likely rub the top of the
middle ring with the chain on the big ring.

Cable-pull/travel is another matter entirely. Shimano makes a special
front derailleur that has the correct pull/travel for flat-bar
(mtb-style) shifters and the proper cage profile for large(r) big rings.

I'm thinking of using 52/34 double. I currently use a Campy 10 sp
front derailleur for 50/34. Do you think I need a road triple front
or will a double work fine?

We've done this a couple of times. The new Compact front der would probably
work as well.
