  1. I get no small amount of ribbing on the number of compasses I own.
    When I walk I
usually have more than one, a habit I got started when I lost the only
    one I was
carrying. (Dropped it, two bounces and over the cliff). Now, when I
    go on a trip
I usually carry 2, but then my watch has a built in compass so
    technically I carry
three. Now, I'm also capable of determining direction to within about
    30 degrees
from various visual cues like the sun or major land marks, so I guess
    you
could call that a 4th. Am I just kinda over the top here or do most
    folks
carry at least 2 and if they were honest, they have some sort of 3rd
    cheepo,
lousy, low accuracy, kids toy kinda compass on then end of a knife or
    something?

I tend to navigate in a similar way... the sun, the stars, the movement of
the clouds, the patterns in the rain, the lie of the grass, the flight of
the raven and an inbuilt sixth sense to find the next Kendal mint cake shop.

You were doing OK right up until you misspelled 'Pub' at the end there.

I navaigate by inferring north from moss growth on trees, using wind
direction as a back up. I spent weeks on Kinder one calm June last year
    trying to get off......

That's easy. Aim for the setting sun. Once your feet get wet, you're off
    Kinder.

You're a little over the top! Do you also carry 2 maps in case you
    lose one?

I've managed to lose both map and compass on the hills over the years
(though never both at the same time!), but still just take one of
each. And just one set of waterproofs and one rucksack, even though I
know of someone who dropped their rucksack down a cliff by mistake,
and have seen someone lose a waterproof jacket when it blew away on
    the hill.

You can't take back-ups of everything 'just in case'. Can you?

Well, now that you mention it. I go on "self guided walking tours".
They supply a set of route notes and maps for each day. I usually
make copies of all of them in case anything happens to one set,
I've still got another. On top of that I usually try to get an OS type
map of the area because the maps usually are fairly narrow in scope.
But that is less back up and more of a supplement for finding
    additional
walks when the days walk is too short.

You can try. But no, and I've started carrying fewer backups
    lately.
I used to always have a spare set of socks but in 15 years I never
used them so I just leave 'em these days. Same with that spare T-shirt
    I
used to carry. I do carry two different knives though (well a swiss
    army
and a leatherman, but they also have different tools on them). I walk
    with
the wife so she carries one flash light (torch) and I carry another.
