contact lenses for swimming

HI, I usually use soft lens (1 month lasting) under my goggles.
They fit well, no problem so far, no need to wash them carefully

I havent been able to get soft contacts, but maybe just for
swimming--thats all i use contacts for--my eye doc will make an
exception. i cant see without glasses and wearing them in the pool is
hard.

Are you a candidate for the intra-ocular contact lens? These are
contacts that go in your eye in addition to the existing lens, not lens
replacement, although I tried to talk a doc into lens replacement for me
despite not having cataracts. I have both severe myopia and severe
astigmatism, but it sounds like you are partially sighted. One form of
the ICL has been FDA approved (relevant only in the US--I think more
kinds have been approved in Europe). I'm waiting with baited breath for
the ones for astigmatism to be approved.

my eye doc mentioned this as a possibility, but right now my eyes are
changing too much to have this done. i went up almost 4 points in my
first two years of college, and i am just scraping in class right now
with the pair i got last summer. i am far worse than partially
sighted--i can't see anything without my glasses!! and even with them i
have a hard time. how high is your prescription? i am somewhere in the
25 point range, i think, with a lot of astigmatism as well.

I typed "competitive blind swimmers" into Google and found out about
products that can make it nearly unnecessary to see.

Granted, it would be nice to see the clock. I keep my glasses in the
goggles case at the side of the pool for that. I suppose it might be nice
to see the other swimmers too but this gives me an excuse not to get
involved in chit-chat. Also, my wife seems not too eager that I be able
to see the other swimmers at the college pool (which is frequented by coeds).

dave, i can't see at all without glasses. unlike most glasses wearing
girls who claim to be blind as a bat when things are just a little
blurry, i have no measurabel vision, meaning that 20/[censored] has no real
meaning. i have worn glasses since i was in the stroller, and even then
they were thick. im just waiting for the day i can have surgery or
even just wear contacts for more than an hour or so.

Difficult to wear? because they don't fit well/thick lenses so they are
uncomfortable or because they aren't comfortable with goggles on?

If it's the latter then I have some experiance of that - lost a lens a
couple of months ago :-(

Was wearing goggles that were a little small and pressed into my eye sockets
slightly so I was forever adjusting them - after I lost the lens I went
looking for larger goggles that fitted my face better - ended up with a pair
of speedo futura legends - not the most stylish things on the planet but
they fitted WAY better than the previous ones - seems to have made the
difference - comfortable with lenses in and they don't have a tendancy to
leak.

Do you swim with anyone who's goggles you could try - I ended up with mine
after borrowing a pair at my local pool after someone had lost them - you
could always try asking at your pool if they have a lost and found box of
goggles you could rummage through!

tim, i have never tolerated any contanct lenses well, especially hard
lenses, and have been limited to a couple of hours at best with any
contacts. add to this the irritation of chlorine and the fact that my
eyes sort of buldge out a lot and so the lenses are just sitting out
there waiting to be washed off.

anyway, i know that sot lenses are more comfortable and larger, and so
stey in the eye better. there is no way i can get a good correction
with soft lenses, but i am only looking for enough vision to see in the
pool, and hopefully with a bit of practice, see well enough to do a
full triathlon without my glasses. the latter is likely wishful
thinking, but glasses are such a pain to wear for these events.

I'm not sure what my script is by that measure, but 20/5000 in one eye
and 20/8000+ in the other. There must be blind swimmer and/or blind
tri-athlete websites. It sounds like you are quite young, so you should
have a lot of hope that technology will help you going forward. You
can't get prescription goggles because they don't go up high enough or
because of the degree of astigmatism? I would think you could get
custom goggles that would work.

use of. i can still see pretty well with glasses, though no where near
well enough to drive. i am hoping for some kind of surgery in a few
years, which will improve my vision so i can do more normal things. in
the meantime, i do sports that don't require good vision.

they can't fit the lenses into regular goggles, and i can't afford to
spend $1K on custom made goggles.

i guess with your vision you understand. do you wear glasses only, or
can you do contacts as well? your lucky if you can do the latter.

I do have contacts, but I have a lot of difficulty with the 20/8000
eye--the left one. That one also has worse astigmatism. I mostly wear
glasses. When I wear contacts, I have to wear reading glasses to read
or work on the computer because I'm old enough to have the presbyopia.
I like to wear my contacts, though, because I find wearing them
strangely anti-depressant. At last I'm not a nerd girl and people make
eye contact with me.
It is horrible that custom contacts are $1000. Glasses are like
orthodics--they have taken something people need like they need oxygen
and made it a big racket.
