Coombe poll

I really like them -- had Speedplays for 10 years prior.
Main advantage of the Coombes over Speedplays is the
Speedplays wear through the soles of your shoes and get some
side to side slop -- no such thing with the Coombes.

Getting in is a bit tougher but not too bad, and they float
about the same (maybe a bit more freely) than the
Speedplays.

I have them as well! I love mine. A buddy turned me on to
them...but he is now switching back to Shimano SPD-
L...mostly because of the slow response time from the
Coombe folks!

There are a couple of pros on the Jittery Joes team riding
them, and I think there is another team that is actually
sponsored by them.

I care particularly about getting out of them at stop
lights, etc, though getting into them is also important.

As long as you screw the cleats in real tight, releasing is
very easy, BTW

The stack height is lower than the SPDs. The feel is also
going to be very different... there is an amount of "free
float" that you won't get in the SPDs. You can use the
rotational stops to limit it, but the float is certainly
"more free" side to side than the SPDs. About the same as
Speedplays (though again the range is a lot less if you use
the stops).

The cleats are nearly flush with the sole, so they are very
easy to walk in. Exit is also very straightfoward -- turn
your heel out far enough and you're out. SPDs can get
difficult to release from when the cleats wear -- this won't
happen with the Coombes.

They are more difficult to enter than the SPDs, because
you must do the little "heel flick" to get in. I find it
pretty straightfoward, but it will take a day or two to
get used to.

Overall, I've used SPDs, Times, Speedplays, and Coombes, and
the latter are my favorite.

They *are* slow on orders though -- the explanation I got
was they order the manufacture of the pedals in "batches" so
it depends on what part of the batch you're in. If they
shipped pedals 2 days previous, and you place an order, it
could be 4-6 weeks before they receive and ship the next
batch to you. As such, it's best to order and then just
count on them arriving when they come. They're a small
company so you're getting exposed to their
manufacturing/process nuances.

Are you using the Ti spindled Speedplays? The Q on the Ti-
spindled Speedplays is significantly less than the stainless
ones (not sure about the cheap steel X-3's). I was using the
SS Speedplays before (at ~175 lb I wouldn't use a Ti
spindle), and I didn't notice a difference in the Q.

Yup. I'm light enough to use the Ti ones. At one point I had
them close enough that the sides of my shoes were getting
wear marks from the cranks.

Interesting that the different speedplays have different Q
factors. Glad I didn't buy the wrong ones.

Incidentally, I got my Coombe's about 2 weeks after I
ordered them. So they must be getting faster.
