  1. I had an errand to run that involved going to a VFW
hall. Didn't know what to expect, just hoped someone
was there. The only door I found was obviously the
entrance to a bar. No windows. Bein maybe 10:30
in the morning, I figured perhaps the bar was closed.
Went around the front, all covered windows and a door
with no doornob. I just hate when stuff like that happens
    to me.

Back around, luckily someone was coming in, they
helped me out, but I got a chance to check out the sign
    by the door.

Okay, I'm fine so far, I get it, it's a bar. A VFW bar.
Then came the other sign underneath.

    NO BASEBALL HATS ON BACKWARDS!!

    DU RAGS or SKULL CAPS!!

I was really trying not to laugh out loud. They weren't
even handwritten, they were metal printed up signs.
    Cracked me up.

Okay, so to get over my ordeal, I decided to stop at a
place I used to go to once in a while, closest thing to a
Jewish deli around these here parts. Irv's Deli. Thing
is, I really didn't have much money on me, at all.
7 bucks. All I want is a corned beef sandwich, wonder
    if I have enough.

So I go in, like a little girl twirling her hair on her finger,
is this enough? I felt like an idiot, I only have 7 dollars,
can I get a corned beef sandwich? WHAT? I only have
7 dollars ... so she says, yeah, NO SIDES. O KAY.
    (did I ask for sides?)

You have just enough, it's $6.89. You pay over there.
I NEED a PLAIN CORNED BEEF NO SIDES! Really
loud. Someone there must be deaf. As I'm paying I can
still hear her yelling NO SIDES! Geez lady, don't worry,
I have no intention of stealing your sides.

    Sandwich was okay.

nancy (can you imagine if I'd asked her for mayo on that?!)

There was considerable controversy in the Legion halls here.
Similar to VFW, they are social clubs for veterans, and you have to
be a member or guest. The controversy was about turbans. It is a
long standing tradition in the Canadian military that any head
dress has to be removed in the mess. So now we have these guys who
tradition is to always wear something on their head and they
complained about discrimination. I guess it is a matter of opinion.
The tradition in the legion is to remove hats out of respect for
fallen soldiers. There is also a tradition in military mess halls
and legions that if someone does not remove their hat they have to
buy a round. So what's the problem? Why not just let them leave
their turbans and yarmulkes on as long as they are willing to buy
    rounds for everyone? :-)

That's funny! My brother's wedding reception was in a back room at a VFW
hall. The front room was definitely a bar with a bunch of grizzled old Vets
sucking up alcohol like sponges. That's one thing the military will teach
you, I guess. But of course, no young whippersnappers with backwards caps,
    etc.

I ordered a corned beef sandwich at a place near where I used to work. The
woman behind the counter asked, "Lettuce, tomato, and mayo?" I looked at
her and said, "Don't you dare." She gave me the strangest look.

I live in Seattle. It's worth your life to get a decent corned beef sandwich
    here.

baseball cap worn backwards. Same with the other headgear.

Having said that, do you think baseball caps are acceptable worn

I like that buy a round rule.

this day the kids remove any hats.

To me $7 seems like a lot for a corn beef sandwich. Are they really
that expensive? Are the sides the bread crust or part of the corn beef?

Here you might have been in trouble if a police officer pulled you over.
There is a little known by-law that states if you don't have at least
$5 on your person you can be held as a vagrant. Around these parts I
haven't heard of anyone charged but they likely are in places like Toronto.

I grew up in a politically incorrect period when it was perfectly
acceptable to make fun of stupid people, and if we wanted to give the
impression that we were retarded we would put our hands on backwards or
wear and oversized hat cocked at a bizarre angle. To this day, when I
see people with hats crooked or backwards I assume a low IQ.

Ridiculous. Jews who wear skull caps keep kosher and would never eat
in let alone want to enter a military mess. [censored] I can't speak
    to.

The wearing of skull caps is not restricted to those who keep entirely
kosher. Most of my Jewish friends are in mixed marriages, but there have
been occasions when they have worn yarmulkes. When I have been to Jewish
funerals, I have donned the yarmulke offered. I would not want to offend
anyone by refusing to do so, even though my upbringing required men to
removal hats in a place of worship.

Granted, only a very small percentage of our veterans are Jews, and
Legion rules were not made up with them in mind, only the military
tradition of removing head gear in the mess. The issue arose a number of
years ago after special ceremonies which Jews and Sikhs had been
invited to participate in, and any ceremony involving the Legion
invariably ends up back in the bar at the Legion hall.

I am not a religious person, so I don't see any real need for people to
adorn themselves with the accoutrements of their religion. I wouldn't
make a scene on their turf, but I think it only fair that they respect
the traditions of their hosts in return.

    Yes, if you're playing baseball.

No if you are in a restaurant or in someone's house.
Wearing a hat at the table is rude and tacky.

i wouldn't pay $7 for a whole corned beef, never mind just a

There are clubs I have gone to that have a "dress code" with similar
rules. No hats, jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, etc.

In Houston, there is a Cajun restaurant, where you order at the counter,
have a seat at a table, then they bring your order to you. They have
signs on the counter, that say they will not wait on anyone who is
talking on a cell phone. I understand how they feel.

Headgear has nothing to do with learning or teaching, so you are
applauding the imposition of an irrelevant prohibition. That's your

Wtf does "not restricted to those who keep entirely kosher" mean...
you're waffling and dancing backwards. Again, I never met any Jew who
wears a skull cap religiously (as in always) who does not keep kosher.
However, many observe rituals of particular religions on occasion only,
very briefly, solely out of respect while attending a particular
function, but that in no way means they are by any stretch of the
imagination observant. Like I've attended various RC services and went
along with the program for an hour or so, acting respectuful, but no
way was I being observant... but no matter, I don't regularly observe
    the rituals of any religion.

Russian dressing? Wow, that brings back memories.

When I was in college (not Harvard) we used to go to
    Harvard Square to a hole-in-the-wall called Elsie's
    for take-out sandwiches.

The Roast Beef Special was served on a hard roll with
thin-sliced Bermuda onion and (IIRC) Russian Dressing or
    mustard.

The Turkey Deluxe was mounds of real turkey, Swiss cheese,
bacon, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing. My favorite.

They also had killer N.Y. stule cheesecake.

OMG the sandwiches were a feast, and around $2-$3. I've
never had a sandwich as good in the ensuing 40 years.

I don't know, perhaps Dear What-s-her-name can tell you or Miss Manners.
I suspect it's considered disrespectful, a sign that the wearer plans to

Because baseball caps have become a gang uniform or
symbol for some kids, and they promote a sloppy,
arrogant attitude for many others. In some circles
it's just another symbol of cliques. The trouble
doesn't just come from the black-trench-coat-Mafia.

It's often the cap-wearers also who refuse to unplug

Headgear and clothing can be a symbol or a major distraction. Where do
    you draw the line?

It's probably a long time since you've been in a high school. Are you
surprised to hear that many, many high schools have had to institute
dress codes that prohibit the exhibition of "butts, backs, breasts,
cleavage, and waistline flesh"? They also prohibit "sagging", where
males wear their pants so low that the pockets are down behind their
knees and they have to pull them up every other step so they don't
fall off. My understanding is that "sagging" was first used in
inner-city high schools to camoflage carrying a pistol.

Any distraction has negative effects of learning.

I've also been told that the saggy dragging pants originated in prison.
This was a sign to homosexual inmates they were "available".
